Fire Science Students Test New Firefighting Technology

Wednesday, October 28

The Italy trip was once again led by Theology Assistant Professor Michael Lombardo, Ph.D. A group of students spent a total of three weeks in Rome. Like trips of years past, the experience was life-changing for most and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

As part of the trip, students were able to take a class to fulfill a general education requirement for Catholic Social Teachings, while Honors Program students applied the trip to their cultural immersion requirement.

Director of the Molly Bish Center and Forensic Criminology Professor, Dr. Ann Marie Mires, instructs her Forensic Archeology students as they lay out a grid in order to map a mock search site for an exercise using the latest radar technology to detect underground anomalies.

Anna Maria College’s Art Center Gallery at Miriam Hall serves as the venue for numerous exhibitions throughout the year. Annual student and faculty exhibitions, as well as historical and contemporary exhibitions support the intellectual and cultural life of Anna Maria College and the surrounding community.

“We appreciate the generosity of the Alden Trustees and their faith in the mission of Anna Maria College,” said Anna Maria College President Mary Lou Retelle. “Their sizeable and worthwhile investment in the College enables us to move forward on significant updates to greatly enhance the comfort and atmosphere of our campus center—one of our busiest locations on campus for students and staff alike.”

Anna Maria is in the process of hiring a designer for the project and renovations will take place this summer. According to David K. Breen, vice president/chief operations officer at Anna Maria, the renovations are expected to take up to four months, with work beginning in May 2016, and the renovated center being completed and unveiled with the onset of the fall 2016 semester.

“The renovations to the existing center will bring about significant improvements to aesthetics, comfort and energy savings,” said Breen.

The current grant follows other sizeable awards to Anna Maria from the George I. Alden Trust over the last decade and before. In 2008, the Alden Trust awarded Anna Maria with $300,000 to update programs and facilities related to science studies; and in 2012 it granted $200,000 for a library upgrade including the creation of the campus’ Information Commons, as well as the creation of Anna Maria’s Student Success Center.

The George I. Alden Trust was established for the maintenance of charitable or philanthropic enterprises, with a particular focus on schools, college and other educational institutions. For more information, visit www.aldentrust.org.
