About Lisa Summer, Ph.D, LMHC, MT-BC
Professor Lisa Summer, PhD, LMHC, MT-BC, helps the special art of Music Therapy come alive at AMC. As its director, she continually infuses students with enthusiasm and passion for this unique and growing profession.
Dr. Summer has been directing the Music Therapy program at AMC since 1995. She is a world-renowned lecturer on this subject and has authored several books including Music: The New Age Elixir and Music and Consciousness, as well as any book chapters and articles that chronicle her clinical work, pedagogical methods, and research in music therapy. Dr. Summer is a frequent presenter at national American Music Therapy Association conferences and internationally in countries such as Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Japan, and China. In 2011 she gave keynote speeches at music therapy conferences in Spain, South Korea, and Taiwan.
Dr. Summer received a Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy from Western Michigan University, a Masters in Creative Arts Therapy from Hahnemann University (now Drexel U), and a Ph.D. in Music Therapy from Aalborg University in Denmark. She has been recognized by the American Music Therapy Association for her accomplishments in research in 1991, for dedicated service to the field in 1999, and most recently in 2011 for outstanding achievements in the region. Dr. Summer also plays the French horn and her clinical specialty is in psychiatric music therapy.
