AMCATS fall to Chargers, 3-0

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College women’s volleyball team fell to Colby-Sawyer College, 3-0, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup at the Fuller Activities Center on Wednesday night.
Out of the gate in game one, the AMCATS were able to keep it close, trailing the Chargers 7-5. Colby-Sawyer took control by rallying to go on a 7-2 run, increasing their lead to 14-7. The Chargers rode that momentum and closed out the first game with seven straight points, 25-10.
 
Game two was much of the same. The AMCATS kept it close through the first nine points, trailing Colby-Sawyer 5-4. Once again the Chargers found their groove, scoring 13 of the next 14 points to grab an 18-5 lead. CSC sophomore Mae Joseph (Newton, Mass.) delivered an ace to close out the second game, 25-8.
 
In the third and final game, Colby-Sawyer jumped out to a 9-0 lead behind the strong serving of junior Kim Shannon (Wallingford, Conn.) and several kills from senior Melissa Estabrook (Newton, Mass.) and freshman Kristen Sawyer (Walpole, Mass.). The AMCATS battled back to take the next three points, including a kill by freshman Marcia McCoy (Hudson, Mass.). Unphased, the Chargers rolled on behind the strong play of junior Meg White (Monroe, Conn.) to take game three by the score of 25-6, giving them the match 3 games to none.
 
The Chargers were paced by junior Genny Moore (Centerville, Mass.) who had four kills, two aces, 1.5 blocks, and an outstanding 33 assists. Kristen Sawyer contributed with six kills while junior Jackie Burnett (Portsmouth, N.H.) chipped in with six digs and four aces.
 
Leading the way for the AMCATS was junior Brittany Langdeau (Wolcott, Conn.) with a team-high 13 digs, while senior Jacqueline Laham (Westwood, Mass.) contributed five digs and three assists.
 
The win improves Colby-Sawyer to 14-8 overall and 6-1 in the TCCC. They will host Middlebury on Friday at 7:00 pm next time out. The AMCATS now fall to 2-13 on the season, dropping to 0-7 in conference play. Anna Maria will travel to face Endicott on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
