PAXTON, Mass. – Anna Maria College senior George Markopoulos (Worcester, Mass.) was selected as The Commonwealth Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Year as announced by Conference Commissioner Gregg Kaye on Friday evening. In addition, he was voted as a member of the All-TCCC First Team.
Markopoulos had an outstanding year, leading all players during conference play with 11 goals and 22 points in just 13 games. Overall on the season, the senior forward totaled 15 goals and 30 points in 18 games. In the process, George set the AMC program record for career goals with 37 and finished second all-time in career points with 78. He had two hat-tricks, five multi-goal matches, and four game-winning goals, while finishing with an impressive .654 shot on goal percentage. The elusive goal scorer did all this while facing constant double, and sometimes, triple-teams from the opposition.
Markopoulos helped lead Anna Maria to an impressive 10-8 overall record, finishing just one win shy of the program’s single season mark. The AMCATS finished 6-7 in the TCCC, setting a program record for the most conference victories in a season.
