AMCATS drop season opener to Eagles, 69-48

Nashua – Sophomore guard Vanessa Bosques (N. Windham, Conn.) notched a game high 21 points with four three pointers and pulled down eight rebounds, while Tonisha Tate (Lynn, Mass.) added 11 points and nine rebounds guiding host Daniel Webster College past Anna Maria College, 69-48 in a northeast regional women’s basketball meeting Wednesday night at Mario Vagge Gymnasium.
 
Bosques hit for 20-plus points from the second straight game while sophomore Alycia Gervais (Windham, Mass.) added eight points and pulled in a career high 13 rebounds as the Eagles moved to 2-0 on the young season.
 
Junior Emily Nugent (Worcester, Mass.) paced the AMCATS (0-1), while sophomore Samantha Ashton (Worcester) added eight points in Anna Maria’s season opener. Amanda Hevy (N. Brookfield, Mass.) added five points off the bench.
 
Sophomore Kirsten Murphy (Woodstock, Conn.) paced the Eagles off the bench with nine points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Kacie Lang (Raymond, N.H.) and junior Joyce Chagan (Boothbay Harbor, Maine) added seven points each. Sophomore Amy Nelson (Cheshire, Conn.) also chipped in with six points.
 
The Eagles led wire-to-wire, and overwhelmed Anna Maria on the boards, finishing with a 55-26 advantage including a decisive 30-10 total on the offensive glass.
 
DWC jumped out to a 10-point lead (16-6) in the opening eight minutes, before Anna Maria would close the gap to three with an 8-1 run keyed by a Mary Moroski ((Worcester) layup for a 17-14 game.
 
Holding a 23-19 lead, the Eagles took control with a quick 7-0 run behind layups from Tate and Murphy and a trey from Bosques and the Eagles held a 33-24 lead at the break.
 
A Brooke Denver (New Britain, Conn.) free throw cut the Eagle lead to eight (37-29) with 16:49 remaining, but the Eagles held the AmCats scoreless over the next 8:23 in steadily building the lead to as high as 21 after another layup from Murphy with 8:58 remaining and DWC would lead by as many as 22 down the stretch.
 
The Eagles return to action on Monday when they visit St. Joseph’s, Conn. at 7:00 p.m.
 
Anna Maria visits St. Joseph’s Friday night in the opening round of the SJC Tip Off beginning at 8:00 p.m.
