Leopards pull away from AMCATS, 69-42

PAXTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women’s basketball team had four players finish in double-figures, including a game-high 15 points and six assists from senior Michelle Fauci (Boxford, Mass.), in a 69-42 victory over Anna Maria College in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup at The Fuller Activities Center on Saturday afternoon. The Leopards improve their record to 9-12 overall and 5-4 in conference play, while the AMCATS drop to 9-12 on the year and 1-8 in the TCCC.
In the first half, both teams played outstanding defense, battling to an 11-all tie through the first 15 minutes of action.
The Leopards then erupted to close the period on a 15-5 run, hitting 7 of their last 11 attempts from the floor to go into intermission holding a 26-16 advantage.
WIT used a 14-6 advantage in points in the paint and an 18-4 edge in points off of turnovers to build the first half lead. Fauci led all players with nine points in the half for the Leopards, while senior Maggie Sielawa (Webster, Mass.) and freshman Chelsea Blair (Holland, Mass.) each added four points apiece for the AMCATS, with Blair also contributing four blocks and two steals.
The Leopards opened the second half on another 15-5 run and never looked back. WIT led by as many as 28 in the period, and finished with a 69-42 loss.
Fauci pace the Leopards with 15 points, six assists, and five steals in the win, while senior Michelle Moffo (Southington, Conn.) (12points, seven steals), junior Kirsten Vallone (Avon, N.Y.) (12 points, 10 rebounds), and senior Jessie Coffey (Wakefield, R.I.) (11 points) each finished in double figures.
Sophomore Samantha Ashton (Worcester, Mass.) led the AMCATS with 13 points, while Blair finished with seven points, eight rebounds, four steals, and a game-high five blocks.
Both teams return to the court on Tuesday with Wentworth hosting Curry at 5:30 pm, and the AMCATS traveling to take on Roger Williams on the road at 6:00 pm.
