Welcome to Anna Maria College
Welcome to Anna Maria College. As the tenth president of this great institution of higher learning, I am proud to say that this is an extraordinary time to be a part of our campus community. With our Strategic Plan: “Vision 2012: Excellence at Anna Maria College” as our guide, we are working hard to link our rich and important past with a dynamic and challenging future for the College, our students, and the communities we serve. Just in the past few years, AMC has expanded its curricular and co-curricular programs to meet the needs of a growing student population. New academic programs for undergraduate and graduate students in the areas of the arts, the sciences, business, education, social services and criminal justice have been introduced or are in development. An expanded array of student activities and five new competitive sports teams including football, lacrosse and tennis have been initiated to support student interests. We have opened an instructional site in the city of Worcester to better serve the growing number of non-traditional and graduate students and launched a number of online degree programs.
Most important, we continue to preserve, cherish and promote the values of the Sisters of Saint Anne, who founded AMC in 1946. Their commitment to excellence in education, hospitality and service remain the hallmarks of an Anna Maria education. Our commitment of service to the Common Good remains steadfast as we graduate women and men of character who contribute to the quality of life in their communities.
We also continue to affirm our commitment to preserving a welcoming community for the diverse community of people of all faiths and traditions who respect our Catholic identity. We are committed to providing a safe, nurturing and respectful environment and providing an educational experience that prepares our graduates to be professionally competitive in the global marketplace and to live lives of meaningful citizenship.
Anna Maria College has always been and will continue to be a community of scholars and learners where the integration of knowledge, the search for truth, the dialogue between faith and reason, the development of the mind and the heart, and the concern for ethical and moral implications are at the core of what we do. Our Board of Trustees, distinguished faculty and talented staff are all dedicated to living out this vision by focusing on one goal: Excellence at Anna Maria College.
Welcome to Anna Maria College!

THE START OF THE NEW ACADEMIC YEAR
Today we begin classes as we open the 2010-11 academic year at the College. There is much enthusiasm and optimism as we welcome 400 new students to our already robust student body. Our new students have just completed a four day Orientation Program designed to prepare them for success as a college student. I have the opportunity to participate in many Orientation events. The two that are most significant to me are our Matriculation Ceremony and our Class Meeting. At the Matriculation... See more
THE CARE AND WELFARE OF STUDENTS
Students have been arriving back on campus for several days and classes begin in a week. While most of our attention is focused on helping students achieve academic success, the holistic care and welfare of our students is a broader and important issue. We take seriously our responsibility to provide a safe and respectful living and learning environment. We strive to provide healthy choices in the dining room and in co-curricular activities. We provide opportunities for spiritual... See more
PARENT & STUDENT COMMUNICATIONS
During our Summer Orientation sessions for incoming freshmen, I have the opportunity to speak with our new students and their parents … separately. One of the things I share with the parents, and will do so again during our Fall Orientation, is the need to allow their children to adapt to college life. The first few days and weeks of the freshman year can be challenging for some students. For many resident students, it’s the first time they have shared a room with someone. The... See more
THE NEED FOR DIVERGENCE AND CONVERGENCE
One of my favorite writers is Thomas Friedman. His 2005 book, The World is Flat, remains one of the most important analyses on the issue of globalization and the need for increased inter-connectedness. I continue to recommend it to people interested in this topic. Friedman writes a regular column in the NY Times and I look forward to his commentary. Lately he has focused a good deal of his attention on issues related to sustainability and climate control. He has vast international... See more
