Welcome to Anna Maria College
Welcome to Anna Maria College. As the tenth president of this great institution of higher learning, I am proud to say that this is an extraordinary time to be a part of our campus community. With our Strategic Plan: “Vision 2012: Excellence at Anna Maria College” as our guide, we are working hard to link our rich and important past with a dynamic and challenging future for the College, our students, and the communities we serve. Just in the past few years, AMC has expanded its curricular and co-curricular programs to meet the needs of a growing student population. New academic programs for undergraduate and graduate students in the areas of the arts, the sciences, business, education, social services and criminal justice have been introduced or are in development. An expanded array of student activities and five new competitive sports teams including football, lacrosse and tennis have been initiated to support student interests. We have opened an instructional site in the city of Worcester to better serve the growing number of non-traditional and graduate students and launched a number of online degree programs.
Most important, we continue to preserve, cherish and promote the values of the Sisters of Saint Anne, who founded AMC in 1946. Their commitment to excellence in education, hospitality and service remain the hallmarks of an Anna Maria education. Our commitment of service to the Common Good remains steadfast as we graduate women and men of character who contribute to the quality of life in their communities.
We also continue to affirm our commitment to preserving a welcoming community for the diverse community of people of all faiths and traditions who respect our Catholic identity. We are committed to providing a safe, nurturing and respectful environment and providing an educational experience that prepares our graduates to be professionally competitive in the global marketplace and to live lives of meaningful citizenship.
Anna Maria College has always been and will continue to be a community of scholars and learners where the integration of knowledge, the search for truth, the dialogue between faith and reason, the development of the mind and the heart, and the concern for ethical and moral implications are at the core of what we do. Our Board of Trustees, distinguished faculty and talented staff are all dedicated to living out this vision by focusing on one goal: Excellence at Anna Maria College.
Welcome to Anna Maria College!

POSSIBLE “MISPERCEPTIONS” ABOUT LIBERAL EDUCATION
A recent issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education included several interesting articles about liberal education. One of the most interesting was entitled, “The Liberal Arts Are Not for Elitists” and was authored by Martha Nussbaum. Dr. Nussbaum is one of the most influential leaders in higher education, a prolific author and a brilliant teacher. This article is an adaptation from a section of her new book, which will be published later this Spring. I will wait until later in the... See more
The Importance of Leadership
One of my favorite quotations comes from the writings of our sixth president, John Quincy Adams. President Adams had an extraordinary career as a statesman, politician, and leader. He once wrote, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” Leaders are often judged by their accomplishments. In a world full of critics and cynics, leaders are measured by performance regardless of the obstacles or challenges. But what I like about... See more
The Public Assessment of Higher Education
A recent report entitled, “Squeeze Play 2010: Continued Public Anxiety On Cost, Harsher Judgments On How Colleges Are Run,” provides much to consider as higher education continues to navigate through these challenging economic times. According to this study, more Americans than ever believe that a college education is necessary, even essential, for success. Fifty-five percent of the respondents express this view, an increase of over 20% in the last decade. While I am still somewhat... See more
The Liberal Bias of the Academy: Is This the Important Issue?
About a month ago, a story appeared in the NY Times entitled, “Professor Is a Label That Leans to the Left.” The Times writer, Patricia Cohen, summarized some recent research about current and prospective faculty members. There has been a great deal written about this topic, so I was not sure that this article would necessarily add to the discussion. But Cohen’s opening paragraph caught my attention. She wrote, “”Now new research suggests that critics may have been asking the... See more
