Anna Maria College will host the symposium Human Rights in Sudan-Solving the Crisis on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at 12:30 p.m. in the Zecco Performing Arts Center at its Paxton, MA campus.  Susan Swanberg of the American Red Cross and representatives of the Satellite Sentinel Project will discuss human rights issues related to the recent conflict between Sudan and Southern Sudan at the event.

To start off the program, a representative of Congresman James McGovern's office will read a letter from the Congressman in regard to the Sudan issue.  Mr. McGovern filed legislation on March 8, 2012 that proposes a set of strategies for producing lasting peace in this region. Last month he was one of many who protested at the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, D.C. The Congressman also delivered a speech on the floor of the House of Representatives on March 21 highlighting the conditions of civilians in Sudan who have been driven into hiding, are being denied access to aid groups and who are living on the brink of starvation.

Susan Swanberg will  be on hand to discuss the efforts of the International American Red Cross in Sudan to prevent humanitarian rights violations, as well as its efforts to support hospital and physical rehabilitation services, improve water and sanitation systems, and help conflict-affected communities to survive and become self-sufficient. Representatives of the Satellite Sentinel Project, for which Actor George Clooney provided seed money, will provide information relative to how their organization is helping to focus world attention on mass atrocities in Sudan and use its imagery and analysis to generate rapid responses on human rights and human security concerns.
