PAXTON, Mass. - The Anna Maria College softball team set the program record for wins in a season with a 5-4 victory over Curry College, before being eliminated from The Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament by a 9-6 loss to Western New England College.
The AMCATS now have 22 wins on the season, topping the program’s previous record of 21 wins achieved in both 1990 and 2002.
During their first game of the day, the AMCATS took an early 1-0 lead versus Curry when Sarah Boyda (Oxford, Mass.) walked and eventually came around to score on a first-inning sacrifice fly by Mary Moroski (Worcester, Mass.).
The Colonels answered with three runs on three hits in the top of the second to grab a 3-1 advantage.
With the AMCATS still trailing by two runs in the bottom of the third, Jill Hurley (Worcester, Mass.) stepped to the plate with the tying runs aboard and promptly launched a go-ahead three-run homer.
After the Colonels tied the game in the top of the fifth, sophomore Becky Mercurio (Worcester, Mass.) drove home Allyssa Boykin (Worcester, Mass.) with the game-winning run on an RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth, propelling Anna Maria to a 5-4 victory.
Junior Holly Renna (Charlton, Mass.) earned her AMC-record 19th win of the season during the victory by surrendering four earned runs over seven strong innings of work.
The AMCATS followed with a 9-6 loss to the Golden Bears of Western New England. AMC held a 6-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth when WNEC erupted for an eight-run inning. Sophomore left fielder Mary Moroski (Worcester, MA) had two doubles and a single while sophomore first base player Samantha Putis(Charlton, MA) also had three hits for Anna Maria. |
AMCATS top Salve, Fall to Endicott
Box Scores: Game 1 / Game 2
BEVERLY, Mass. – Endicott College scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to beat Anna Maria College, 5-2, and advance in the winners bracket of The Commonwealth Coast Conference Playoffs on Thursday afternoon in Beverly, Mass. The AMCATS defeated Salve Regina University, 4-2, in game one of the playoff doubleheader to advance and take on the Gulls. TCCC Tournament action resumes on Friday when the Gulls will host a pair of games in Beverly, Mass. as well as in Wenham, Mass. at Gordon College.
In the first game of the day between Anna Maria and Salve Regina, Holly Renna (Charlton, Mass.) tossed seven innings, giving up only three hits and a pair of unearned runs as the AMCATS defeated the Seahawks, 4-2.
Neither team produced any offense until the top of the fourth when Anna Maria had runners on second and third with Tabitha Ruggeri (Sturbridge, Mass.) up at the plate. Salve’s Sarah Jakiela (Meriden, Conn.) was called for an illegal pitch that allowed the runners to move up a base and pushed the first run across for the AMCATS. Ruggeri then took the next Jakiela offering and hit a perfectly placed flyball down the left field line that dropped in for a single and gave AMC a 2-0 lead.
Allyssa Boykin (Worcester, Mass.) added a solo homerun in the top of the fifth and Samantha Putis (Charlton, Mass.) added one of her own in the bottom of the sixth to stake the AMCATS to a 4-0 lead headed into the seventh inning. Salve Regina finally strung some offense together as the Seahawks had runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Christina Walsh (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) hit a groundball to shortstop that could have ended the game but Becky Mercurio’s (Worcester, Mass.) throw sailed high of first and allowed two runs to score and cut the Anna Maria lead to 4-2. Renna retained her composure and forced Kristen Parolise (Hamden, Conn.) to fly out to rightfield to end the game.
Anna Maria received multi-hit days from Tabitha Ruggeri, Mary Moroski (Worcester, Mass.) and Becky Mercurio as the trio combined to go 6-for-9 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Boykin and Putis each drove in a run and scored a run as they did all their damage with two swings of the bat with a pair of solo homeruns.
Salve Regina was led by a 2-for-3 day from Jillian Quintana (Denver, Colo.) while Courtney Fleming (Wethersfield, Conn.) added the other base hit and scored a run. Sarah Jakiela suffered the setback, going seven innings and giving up nine hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out four.
Anna Maria advanced to take on Endicott in game two and came out swinging as the AMCATS grabbed a quick 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Moroski that scored 2010 TCCC Player of the Year Sarah Boyda (Oxford, Mass.). The Gulls were quick to respond, however, as Hayley Hovhanessian (Farmington, Conn.) singled home Merry MacDonald (Braintree, Mass.) to knot the game at one run apiece in their half of the first.
AMC took its second lead of the ballgame as Jill Hurley (Worcester, Mass.) dropped down a bunt with Boyda and Ruggeri in scoring position and Endicott’s Nicole Devlin (Dudley, Mass.) could not make a play, giving the AMCATS a 2-1 lead. Anna Maria eventually loaded the bases, but 2010 TCCC Pitcher of the Year Jenna Bortolotti (Milton, Mass.) struck out Putis and forced Dominique Marchand (Mendon, Mass.) to lineout to second to end the threat.
In the bottom of the fourth, pinch-hitter Colleen Martin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) started a two-out rally with her single into right center. Martin stole second and was followed by a walk to Sarah Spaziano (Norton, Mass.). 2010 Rookie of the Year Krista Fales (Melrose, Mass.) stepped to the plate and promptly nailed an RBI single up the middle to score Martin and tie the game at 2-2. Megan Downey (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) had similar results in the next at bat as she drove an RBI single to the same spot to give EC a 3-2 lead. Senior Jenna Lazar (Milton, Mass.) capped off the scoring for the Gulls with another single up the middle, plating a pair of runs, and giving the Gulls a three-run advantage.
Following a dropped by flyball in the outfield to start the fifth, Jenna Bortolotti only allowed one hit over her final three innings of work to pick up her 18th win of the season. The junior went seven innings, allowing only five hits and giving up two runs (one earned) while striking out six. Bortolotti received plenty of offense from her senior teammates as Downey, Lazar, MacDonald and Sarah Spaziano combined to go 8-for-14 on the day with three RBI and three runs scored.
The AMCATS received hits from Boyda, Ruggeri, Moroski and Boykin to pace their attack. Moroski drove in the lone RBI for AMC while Sarah Boyda scored both of the AMCAT runs. Holly Renna fell to 19-13 this season after allowing 11 hits and five earned runs in six innings of work.
All three teams return to action on Friday afternoon. No. 4-seeded Salve Regina faces off with No. 3 Western New England College at 2:30 p.m. on the campus of Endicott College. #5 Anna Maria travels to Gordon College to take on #6 Curry College, also at 2:30 p.m. Top-seeded Endicott hosts No. 2 University of New England following the Salve Regina/WNEC game while the winner of Salve Regina and WNEC takes on the winner of Anna Maria and Curry following the completion of the AMC/Curry game.

Second baseman Alyssa Boykin (Worcester, MA) then came up and smacked a triple down the right field line to tie the score at two.
The Pilgrims quickly regained the lead, scoring a run in the second and then adding two more in the third to build a 5-2 advantage.
In the fourth inning, the AMCATS got things going with a single by Michelle Blackler (Ashland, Mass). Back-to-back hits by Boyda and Tabitha Ruggeri (Sturbridge, Mass.) plated two runs to cut the lead to 5-4. Moroski then provided the power, blasting a two-run homer over the left field fence to take the lead 6-5.
After the AMCATS added a run in the fifth, the Pilgrims exploded for six runs in the top of the sixth. Gabrielle Timms (Clark Summit, PA) led off the inning with a double, followed by a single from Purdy. After a hit by pitch loaded the bases, the Pilgrims scored a run on a fielder’s choice. Sloppy fielding led to another run, tying the game at 7-7 before White singled in a run with an infield hit, giving the Pilgrims a and 8-7 lead, which they never relinquished. The Pilgrims tacked on three more runs and held on for the 11-7 victory.
Game two featured less hitting, as Renna was able to keep the Pilgrims quiet for most of the game. The Pilgrims picked up a 1-0 lead in the first, scoring an unearned run.
An RBI single by Putis in the second and an unearned run in the third, helped give the AMCATS a 2-1 lead. The AMCATS put up two more runs in the fourth, highlighted by RBI singles from Becky Mercurio (Worcester, Mass.) and Boyda to extend their lead to 4-1.
After being shut down for four innings, the Pilgrims managed to tie the game with three runs in the top of the sixth. An RBI single by Timms cut the lead to 4-2, before Purdy launched a two-run blast over the center field fence to tie the game at four-all.
The AMCATS responded in the bottom half of the frame to take the lead for good. A bases loaded walk by Ruggeri, a sacrifice fly by Moroski, and a two RBI double by Hurley highlighted the rally and put the AMCATS ahead 8-4.
The Pilgrims closed the gap to 8-6 on a two-run homerun by White in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough. Renna was able to hold on for the 8-6 victory, improving her record to 12-11.
The Pilgrims will be back in action at Eastern Nazarene on Monday, while the AMCATS will take on Curry at home Wednesday at 3:30 pm.

Boyda sets steals mark as AMCATS sweep Pride
Boyda broke the 28-year-old AMC steals record
Box Scores: Game 1 / Game 2
PAXTON, Mass. – Junior Sarah Boyda (Oxford, Mass.) set the Anna Maria College single season record for steals, which had stood for 28 years, as the AMCATS swept the Pride of Regis College in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference softball doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. The AMCATS took game one 2-1, before earning an 8-6 victory in the night to improve their record to 14-16 (10-6 TCCC), while the Pride fall to 7-24 (4-10 TCCC).
Boyda broke the AMC steals record in the third inning of game one, swiping her third base of the game to give her 23 steals in 23 attempts on the year. Boyda broke Melanie Suleski’s mark of 22 steals set in 1982. Sophomores Samantha Putis (Charlton, Mass.), Becky Mercurio (Worcester, Mass.), and Mary Moroski (Worcester, Mass.) were each 3-for-6 on the day, while junior Allyssa Boykin (Worcester, Mass.) and freshman Tabitha Ruggeri (Sturbridge, Mass.) were both 3-for-7. Freshman Michelle Blackler (Ashland, Mass.) had a team-high three runs batted in, including her first collegiate home run, while junior Jill Hurley (Worcester, Mass.) and Samantha Putis each added big flies of their own. Starting pitcher Holly Renna (Charlton, Mass.) earned the win in both games of the double-dip, surrendering just three earned runs in 13 1/3 inning of work, while striking out seven batters and improving her record to 11-10 on the year.
Junior Hope Benjamin (Rochester, Mass.) led the offensive attack for the Pride with three hits, a home run, three runs scored, and two runs batted in. Sophomore Kendra Abram (Acushnet, Mass.) added three hits of her own, while sophomore Caitlin Luquet (Walnut Creek, Calif.) chipped in with two hits, a homer, two runs scored, and two runs batted in game two.
The first game of the doubleheader was a classic pitcher’s duel between AMC’s Holly Renna and Regis’ Kendra Abram.
Boyda got things going for the AMCATS in the first, drawing a walk and then stealing both second and third before coming home on a sacrifice fly from Moroski to give AMC an early 1-0 lead.
The AMCATS added another run in the second when Putis launched what turned out to be the game-winning solo home run over the left field fence.
The Pride managed to scratch across an unearned run in the fifth to cut the AMC lead to 2-1. Benjamin, who had doubled earlier in the inning, got Regis on the board when she came around to score on a costly throwing error by the AMCATS.
However, that was all the Pride could manage off of Renna, who allowed just two hits while nailing down the 2-1 victory for the AMCATS in game one.
In the night cap, the AMCATS built a 5-0 lead with two runs in the second and three more in the third, receiving two-run homers from both Blackler and Hurley.
The Pride battled back with three runs on five hits in the top of the fourth. Benjamin drove home the first Regis run with an RBI double to left and eventually came around to score on a ground out by senior Katie Bradford (Medway, Mass.) to cut the AMC lead to 5-3.
The AMCATS answered right back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, as Boykin and Mercurio each smacked RBI singles to push the Anna Maria lead back to five at 8-3.
Refusing to go away, the Pride responded with three runs in the top of the fifth, receiving a two-run blast from Luquet and a solo shot by Benjamin to claw back to within two at 8-6.
After getting pulled in the fourth, Renna was reinserted to pitch with two outs in the fifth and shut down the Pride for the remaining 2 1/3 innings to preserve the 8-6 win for the AMCATS.
The Pride will take the field again on Friday when they host Roger Williams at 4:00 pm, while the AMCATS return to action on Saturday, traveling to face the University of New England in a TCCC doubleheader starting at noon.

Box Scores: Game 1 / Game 2
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England College softball team suffered its first conference loss of the season after dropping the second game of a doubleheader 7-6 in eight innings against Anna Maria Tuesday (Apr. 13).
WNEC is now 18-11 overall and 13-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC). The AMCATS have a 12-16 record and 8-6 mark in the league.
The Golden Bears took the opener by the score of 4-1 behind the one-hit pitcher of sophomore Sarah Lempicki (Southington, CT) who walked three and struck out a season high 13. She now has a perfect 5-0 record. Lempicki also homered in the fourth that tied the game.

Box Scores: Game 1 / Game 2
PAXTON, Mass. – Junior Holly Renna (Charlton, Mass.) earned two wins, including a complete-game four-hit shutout in the opener, to spark the Anna Maria College softball team to a sweep over Eastern Nazarene College in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader at O’Neill Softball Field on Saturday afternoon. The AMCATS are currently riding a five-game winning streak, improving their record to 11-15 (7-5 TCCC), while the Lions fall to 3-19 (2-12 TCCC).
The AMCATS offensive attack was led by Sarah Boyda (Oxford, Mass.) who went 3-for-6 at the plate with four runs scored and one run batted in, while going 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts. Sophomores Mary Moroski (Worcester, Mass.) and Becky Mercurio (Worcester, Mass.) also had three hits apiece, with Moroski driving in two runs, and Mercurio scoring three more. Freshman Tabitha Ruggeri (Sturbridge, Mass.) led all players with five runs scored while adding a double and a triple on the day. Junior Emily Nugent (Worcester, Mass.) also played well, knocking home a game-high three runs batted in with a bases clearing double in game two. Junior Allyssa Boykin (Worcester, Mass.) and sophomore Samantha Putis (Charlton, Mass.) chipped in with two hits apiece, while junior Jill Hurley (Worcester, Mass.) smacked a two-run homer. On the mound, Renna earned a victory in both games, improving her season record to 8-9. She surrendered just two runs in 10 strong innings of work, striking out 11 batters on the day.
The Lions were paced by junior Amber Burns (Fall River, Mass.) who had three hits on the day, including a 2-for-2 performance in game two with a double and a solo home run. Seniors Christine Tucker (Antioch, Calif.) and Stephanie Pestilli (Norwell, Mass.) each added two hits on the day, while junior Bethany Greenfield (Parsippany, N.J.), junior Laura Giberson (Hingham, Mass.), and sophomore Hannah Moore (Sheridan, Calif.) each contributed one hit apiece.
The AMCATS came storming out of the gates early in game one, scoring 10 runs over the first three innings.
Boyda and Ruggeri both walked and scored in the first to get things started, giving AMC a 2-0 lead.
The AMCATS then collected three runs on three hits in the bottom of the second, as Mercurio, Boyda, and Ruggeri each scored a run.
Anna Maria followed up with five runs on five hits in the third, including an RBI-single to left by Boyda, a run-scoring triple into the right centerfield gap by Ruggeri, and an RBI-single through the left side by Moroski.
Renna held the Lions scoreless on just four hits through five innings, as the AMCATS earned the 10-0 victory.
AMC continued their hot-hitting in game two, scoring eight runs in the first two innings of play. The AMCATS scored four in the first, including an RBI-double to left by Moroski and a two-run homer by Hurley. Anna Maria continued with four more in the second, receiving an RBI-double to deep left by Boykin, and a two-run single to center by Putis.
The Lions got one back on a solo shot by Burns in the top of the fourth, but the AMCATS responded with three more runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Nugent delivered a bases clearing double into left centerfield with the bags juiced.
The Lions added a run in the top of the fifth when Tucker came home on an single to left by Greenfield, however, Renna was able to bear down and retire the side to preserve the 11-2 win for the AMCATS.
The Lions will take the field again on Thursday when they face Roger Williams on the road at 4:00 pm, while the AMCATS return to action on Tuesday, traveling to face WNEC in a TCCC doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.

Renna leads AMCATS to sweep over Leopards
Renna tossed a four-hit shutout in the nightcap
Box Scores: Game 1 / Game 2
BOSTON, MASS. – Junior Holly Renna (Charlton, Mass.) pitched a four-hit shutout in the nightcap as Anna Maria completed a The Commonwealth Coast Conference sweep of Wentworth with a 2-0 win. The AMCATS took the opening game, 8-4. With the two wins, Anna Maria runs its win streak to three and improves to 9-15 (5-5 TCCC) while Wentworth sees its four-game win streak end, falling to 10-13 (3-7).
In the opener the hosts got on the board first when junior Lizz Harvey (McConnellsburg, Pa.) doubled home sophomore Krysta Cunha (New Bedford, Mass.). However, the AMCATS responded with three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-1 lead, thanks in part to a two-run single from sophomore Becky Mercurio (Worcester, Mass.). An inning later, Anna Maria extended its lead to 7-1 when sophomores Mary Moroski (Worcester, Mass.) and Samanatha Putis (Charlton, Mass.) each had two-run home runs.
Wentworth came across to score two times in the fifth inning when Harvey drew a bases-loaded walk and senior Caylee Johanson (Windsor, Conn.) and an RBI on an infield single. However, the Leopards, who earlier in the inning had a runner thrown out at the plate, left two runners on. In the sixth inning the Leopards pulled within 7-4 when senior Cherie Dunn (Acton, Mass.) scored on an error.
Anna Maria got a run back in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single from junior Dominique Marchand (Mendon, Mass.) to make it an 8-4 game. Wentworth had a runner on with one out in the bottom of the inning, but a double play ended the game.
Renna picked up the win as she allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and struck out four. Putis was the lone AMCAT to have a multiple-hit game, as well as driving in two runs, while Morosky and Mercurio also drove in two runs.
Johanson took the loss, allowing eight runs (seven earned) and striking out three batters. Cunhan had a pair of hits and two runs scored, while Harvey drove in two runs.
Anna Maria did all of its scoring in the second game in its first at bat. Junior Sarah Boyda (Oxford, Mass.) led off with a walk and advanced to third on a freshman Tabitha Ruggeri (Sturbridge, Mass.) single. When Ruggeri stole second, Boyda took off for home, where she was safe. The next batter, Moroski, doubled in Ruggeri to give Anna Maria a 2-0 lead.
Wentworth had at least one runner in scoring position in the second and fourth innings and would load the bases with one out in the sixth inning before Renna induced a popup and a lineout to end the threat.
Renna (6-9) allowed four hits and struck out seven, while offensively, Boyda and Ruggeri each recorded two hits. Johanson (9-12) took the loss, allowing a pair of runs on eight hits and striking out five and recorded a pair of hits at the plate. Cunha had Wentworth’s other two hits.
Both teams are back in action on Saturday as Wentworth travels to Curry and Anna Maria hosts Eastern Nazarene.

Boykin and Renna help AMC earn split with Gulls
 Renna tossed a complete-game shutout
Box Scores: Game 1 / Game 2
BEVERLY, Mass. – Following a 15-1 throttling in game one, the Endicott College softball team’s bats went silent in game two as Anna Maria edged the Gulls, 1-0, in the nightcap of a The Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader in Beverly, Mass. The Gulls remain at .500 this season at 8-8 and 3-3 in the TCCC while Anna Maria improves to 7-15 overall and 3-5 in league play.
In game one of the double-header, Endicott plated seven runs in the opening inning as the first 10 batters to come to bat reached base safely. In the inning, Ashley Wright (Merrimack, N.H.) blasted her second homerun of the season to left centerfield, scoring Sarah Spaziano (Norton, Mass.). The Gulls would score seven runs on four hits in the frame.
The Blue and Green scored a run each in the second and third inning, including Wright’s second homerun of the day in the second inning, before bursting out with six more runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Gulls loaded the bases and scored a pair of runs on back-to-back RBI singles from Jocelyn Russo (Middletown, Conn.) and Katherine McGann (Topsfield, Mass.) before Endicott’s Nicole Devlin (Dudley, Mass.) promptly cleared the bases two pitches later as the freshman belted her first career homerun, a grand slam.
Anna Maria finally got on the board in the top half of the fifth as Sarah Boyda (Oxford, Mass.) singled through the left side of the infield to make it a 15-1 game. Jenna Bortolotti (Milton, Mass.) was unfazed, however, as she retired the next two batters she faced by inducing a pop out and ending the game with a strikeout.
Seven different Gulls had an RBI while eight others recorded a hit in the win, while McGann, Merry MacDonald (Braintree, Mass.) and Ashley Wright each had multi-hit games for Endicott. Wright also added three RBI on her two homeruns while Nicole Devlin drove in all four of her runs on one swing of the bat. Jenna Bortolotti (2-5) gave up only two hits and one unearned run while striking out seven in five innings of work.
Anna Maria only mustered two hits in the game from Boyda and Becky Mercurio (Worcester, Mass.) while Boyda recorded the team’s only RBI. Holly Renna (Charlton, Mass.) suffered the setback and fell to 3-9 on the season while only throwing 1.1 innings and giving up five hits and eight runs (five earned).
Game two was a much different story as both teams went scoreless through the first six innings of play. Both pitchers kept the other team’s bats silent until Anna Maria’s Allyssa Boykin (Mendon, Mass.) broke the tie as she hit a solo homerun in the top of the seventh to give the AMCATS a 1-0 lead. AMC eventually loaded the bases as Dominique Marchand (Mendon, Mass.) singled, Becky Mercurio doubled, and Sarah Boyda was intentionally walked. Endicott’s Kayla Carignan (Laconia, N.H.) worked out of the jam however by inducing a pop out to third base by Tabitha Ruggeri (Sturbridge, Mass.).
In the Gulls’ half of the seventh, Sarah Spaziano led off the inning with a single in the hole and was sacrificed over to second by Hayley Hovhanessian (Farmington, Conn.). Devlin pinch hit and fouled out to the third baseman but Kelly Tenney (Sandy Hook, Conn.) drew a two-out walk to extend the inning. On ball four, the ball slipped past catcher Sarah Boyda which allowed Spaziano and Tenney to advance into scoring position. Unfortunately, Endicott’s rally came up short as Byrne Katz (Trumbull, Conn.) grounded back to the pitcher to end the game.
The Gulls were only able to grab five hits off Holly Renna including doubles from MacDonald and Ashley Wright. Kayla Carignan (6-3) suffered the setback for the Gulls despite going seven innings giving up one earned run while scattering seven hits.
Anna Maria was led by Boykin’s solo shot and 2-for-3 performances from Sarah Boyda and Becky Mercurio. Holly Renna rebounded from a tough start in game one to improve to 4-9, while going seven innings and giving up only five hits.
The Blue and Green return to action when they host Eastern Nazarene College at 3:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon. Anna Maria will take on Wentworth next Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in Boston, Mass.

Bison walk off with sweep over AMCATS
Ruggeri hit her first collegiate home run
Box Scores: Game 1 / Game 2
DUDLEY, Mass. (March 28) – Sophomore catcher Chelsea Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) hit a walkoff two-run home run in the second game of a doubleheader to help the Nichols College softball team complete a The Commonwealth Coast Conference sweep of Anna Maria College Sunday afternoon with a 7-5 victory. Nichols won the opening game, 4-1, and improves to 6-10 overall and 4-2 in TCCC action, while the AMCATS drop to 6-14 and 2-4 in conference play.
Nichols held a 5-1 lead through six innings, but the AMCATS tied up the game in the top of the seventh thanks to a two-run double from Allyssa Boynkin (Worcester, Mass.) and a fielding error.
The AMCATS scored the first batter of the game on an RBI double from Mary Moroski (Worcester, Mass.), but it was all Bison after that, as Nichols doubled up its visitors in the bottom half of the inning and then put up single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings.
Loren Rozanski (Plainville, Conn.) led Nichols with a 3-for-4 outing and three RBI, plating two in the bottom of the first inning with a single. Shayna Ramalho (Monroe, Conn.) plated a run in the third before Rozanski sent another across in the fifth on a double, and a Samantha Hardigan (Brockton, Mass.) single allowed Kylie Langton (Medford, Mass.) to score in the sixth.
Nichols sophomore Molly Ferraro (Millis, Mass.) fanned six and allowed six hits to earn the win, while Holly Renna (Charlton, Mass.) took the loss with 11 hits and five strikeouts in five innings. She was briefly replaced by Michelle Blackler (Ashland, Mass.), who allowed one run on two hits in the sixth inning.
In the first game, Nichols took advantage of a pair of fielding errors to score three runs in the second inning. With the bases loaded, a sac fly from Valeri Calcagni (Rocky Hill, Conn.) sent the first run across, and Lauren Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) followed with an RBI single. Shannon Weeks (Greenfield, Mass.) bunted the next run across before a groundout ended the inning.
The AMCATS got one back in the top of the third on a solo home run from Tabitha Ruggeri (Sturbridge, Mass.), but Nichols pitcher Kara Buckley (Nashua, N.H.) held them in check with two hits over the remainder of the game.
Lauren Correia plated one more in the sixth for the Bison with a single; she finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
Buckley earned the win with two strikeouts and seven hits allowed, while Renna took the loss with five strikeouts and five hits.
Nichols returns to action on Tuesday, March 30th when the Bison host a TCCC doubleheader against Salve Regina at 3:30 p.m. Anna Maria travels to Endicott Tuesday for a 3 p.m. conference twinbill.

AMCATS slug their way to sweep over Gordon
 Boyda was 7-for-8 with 4 runs and 4 SB's
Box Scores: Game 1 / Game 2
PAXTON, Mass. – The Anna Maria College softball team pounded-out 27 hits and 18 runs while sweeping Gordon College in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The AMCATS held on for a 5-4 win in game one before exploding for a 13-9 victory in the second game of the double-dip. Anna Maria improves to 6-12 overall while evening their conference record at 2-2. The losses drop the Fighting Scots to 9-6 on the season and 4-2 in TCCC play.
Junior Sarah Boyda led the AMCATS’ offensive attack by going 7-for-8 at the plate, scoring four runs and adding four stolen bases. Sophomore Mary Moroski (Worcester, Mass.) also had an excellent day, going 4-for-8 including a double and a home run while scoring five runs and driving in five more. Sophomore Samantha Putis (Charlton, Mass.) added four hits of her own, while freshman Tabitha Ruggeri (Sturbridge, Mass.) chipped in with two hits, two walks, and four runs scored. Juniors Holly Renna (Charlton, Mass.) and Nicole Hackenson (Mendon, Mass.) each earned victories on the mound, improving their records to 3-6 on the season.
Kristen Terry (Chalfont, Pa.) paced the Scots with five hits on the day, including a 3-for-3 performance in game one. Center fielder Kim Levinsky (West Caldwell, N.J.) added four hits in the doubleheader, while Kerry McPartlan (Yonkers, N.Y.) hit a pair of home runs with a team-high four runs batted in for Gordon.
The AMCATS jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Junior Allyssa Boykin (Worcester, Mass.) and Samantha Putis delivered RBI-singles.
AMC added a run in the third on an RBI-single by sophomore Becky Mercurio (Worcester, Mass.), and two more in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.
Renna, who cruised through the first four innings, ran into some trouble in the top of the fifth when McPartlan hit a two-run bomb to deep centerfield. After a double by Terry and a single by Levinsky put runners on the corners with one out, Anna Maria escaped further damage with some superb defense. Boykin fielded a grounder to second and flipped to Mercurio who grabbed the ball with her bare hand and threw to first to complete the inning-ending double play.
Trailing 5-2 in the final frame, Gordon rallied for two runs, including an RBI-single by Terry to cut the lead to one. The Scots had the tying run on second and the go ahead run on first when Courtney Stevenson (Bangor, Maine) smashed a line drive to center field that looked destined for extra bases. However, AMC center fielder Emily Nugent (Worcester, Mass.) snagged the line drive and alertly threw to second to force the runner and complete a game-ending double play.
In game two, the Scots got on the board first as Elisabeth Cheeseman (Winslow, Maine) drove home Claire Bennett (Mumford, N.Y.) with an RBI-double to right to give Gordon a 1-0 lead.
The AMCATS responded with five runs over the next three innings to claim a 5-1 lead. Putis had an RBI single in the first and an RBI double in the fourth, while Nugent added a runs scoring triple in the second, and Moroski drove home a run with a double in the third.
After the Scots fought back with a run in the top of the fourth, the AMCATS put up four runs in the bottom half of the frame, including a three-run homer by Moroski, to build a 9-2 advantage.
Still, the Scots refused to go away quietly, answering with five runs on three hits in the top of the fifth. Gordon took advantage of four walks in the frame and received a big two-run double from Sarah Quint (Wells, Maine) to cut the AMC lead to 9-7.
That was as close as the Scots got, as the AMCATS continued their offensive ways by tacking on three runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to hold off the Scots and capture the 13-9 victory.
Gordon will return to the field on Tuesday when they host Wentworth at 3:00 pm, while the AMCATS face Nichols on the road in a TCCC doubleheader beginning at noon.

AMCATS sweep NIghthawks on the road
 Hurley was 7-for-8 Thursday
Box Scores: Game 1 / Game 2
The Newbury College softball program lost both games of a non-conference doubleheader against Anna Maria College Thursday afternoon by scores of 11-2 and 12-3. The AMCATS were led by junior Jill Hurley (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) who finished the day a combined 7-for-8 in both games.
Anna Maria jumped out early in game one putting two runs on the board in the first inning off back-to-back singles by Mary Moroski (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) and Hurley. They scored an additional three runs in the top of the second as the AMCATS strung together four hits before freshman pitcher Rebecca Roach (Charlton, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) settled down striking out the final two batters of the inning.
Newbury took advantage of the momentum and put their first run on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore Ariel Ross (Gales Ferry, CT/Ledyard) walked, advanced to second a single by senior Jessica Jordan (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham), and scored on an error by the first baseman. It would not be enough, however, as the AMCAT bats exploded in the top of the fifth inning as they scored five runs on an additional four hits and two Nighthawk errors. Despite the loss, Newbury freshman Brittany Stracher (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) hit her first collegiate homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Game two began as a much different story as Newbury was able to silence Anna Maria and take the lead in the first inning. Senior Katelyn Mark (Quincy, MA/North Quincy) reached on an error by the pitcher, also taking second base on the play. Mark would go on to steal third and score on a wild pitch by Anna Maria’s Nicole Hackenson (Mendon, MA/Nipmuc Regional).
The second and third innings saw Anna Maria bring the score to 3-1 led by an RBI double off the bat of Samantha Putis (Charlton, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional). They would break the game open in the fourth, however, as Newbury committed three errors and surrendered five hits totaling six AMCAT runs.
Five Nighthawks recorded hits in game two as Mark, Stracher, Roach, Ross, and Theresa Hylinski (Stratford, CT/Stratford) all reached base safely.
The loss drops Newbury to 2-6 while Anna Maria improves to 4-12. The Nighthawks travel to Regis College on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at noon.

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team began play in The Commonwealth Coast Conference with two wins against Anna Maria College Wednesday afternoon, winning by the score 6-2 and 6-3.
In the first game, Anna Maria got the scoring going early with an RBI double by Jill Hurley (Worcester, Mass.) to bring in Mary Moroski (Worcester, Mass.) in the top of the first. Samantha Putis’ (Charlton, Mass.) RBI single would follow later in the inning, scoring Hurley.
Roger Williams managed to get one of the runs back in the second when Melissa Sereti (Shrewsbury, Mass.) brought in Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.) with a base hit of her own. In the next inning, the Hawks tied the game when Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y.) scored on a base hit by Kerry Burke (Old Saybrook, Conn.). Sereti then drew a bases-loaded walk to give RWU the lead. The one-run RWU advantage lasted until the sixth inning, when the Hawks added six more runs on the board to go up by four.
Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) earned the win, allowing two runs on nine hits and a walk in seven innings. Pirez went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Sereti had a hit and two RBI.
Holly Renna (Charlton, Mass.) took the loss, tagged for six runs (four earned) in six innings. Alyssa Boykin (Worcester, Mass.) and Michelle Blackler (Ashland, Mass.) each went 2-for-3 for Anna Maria.
The second game started out strongly in the Hawks’ favor, as RWU did all its damage in the bottom of the first. The Hawks brought ten batters to plate and scored all six of their runs in the frame. Leadoff hitter Sarah Grill (Watervliet, N.Y.) was the first to score, coming in on Castro’s sacrifice fly. Laura McConnell (Lexington, Mass.) scored the final run of the inning, coming down from third on a double steal.
The AMCATS halved the deficit in the top of the third with three runs in the inning. Becky Mercurio (Worcester, Mass.) scored on an RBI single by Sarah Boyda (Oxford, Mass.). Emily Nugent (Worcester, Mass.) would later score sacrifice fly by Moroski, followed by Boyda taking advantage of a rundown between first and second to add the third run of the game for Anna Maria.
The AMCAT offense would be held in check from there, as Anna Maria was held to only three hits over the final three innings, as RWU held on for the win.
Kelly Marcin (Windsor Locks, Conn.) picked up the win, giving up three runs in seven innings. Pirez, Teves, and Sereti each contributed a hit, an RBI, and a run scored in the game.
Nicole Hackenson (Mendon, Mass.) suffered the loss, allowing all six runs (two earned) in the game. Boyda went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while Mercurio had one hit in three trips with a run scored.

AMCATS drop two versus Engineers
Boyda was 5-8 with a SB on Saturday
Box Scores: Game 1 / Game 2
Worcester, MA --- Down to its final out and trailing 3-2, WPI used three consecutive seventh-inning singles to send the game into extra innings and delivered another rally in the eighth to finish off a 5-3 comeback win and complete a doubleheader sweep of Anna Maria on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers defeated the AMCATS 5-2 in game one of the double-dip, which was played at WPI due to poor early-season wet field conditions in Paxton. The wins give WPI an 8-2 record on the season, while Anna Maria fell to 2-10.
All three batters that delivered the key hits to tie the game had been down to their last strike before coming through. Senior Kelly Johnson (Buxton, ME) kept the Engineers alive in game two with a two-out single up the middle, followed by a Kim Martilla (Kings Park, NY) base hit that moved her to second. Fellow senior Meg Foley (Belchertown, MA) completed the comeback with the third straight single to center, chasing Johnson home with WPI's third run and sending the game into extras.
With new life, WPI took its first lead in the top of the eighth. The Engineers had runners on second and third with one out in the inning and would take the lead on catcher Erin Beaulieu's (Bethany, CT) single to right-center. Allie Roche (Chelmsford, MA) followed Beaulieu with another RBI base hit that gave the Crimson and Gray a key insurance run for a 5-3 advantage.
Katherine Fitton (Lebanon, CT) closed the door with a 1-2-3 eighth inning for her second save of the season. Starter Erin Flaherty (Stoughton, MA) allowed single runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings but pitched well-enough to win her third game of the year (3-1). Flaherty went seven innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out three.
Anna Maria had jumped to 2-0 lead on a bases loaded walk by Alyssa Boykin in the first and a Becky Mercurio RBI single in the fourth. WPI leveled the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth on a two-run single by Johnson before the AMCATS regained the advantage on a Mary Morosk run-producing double in the bottom of the frame.
Johnson was 2-for-3 in game two, while Roche and Foley each posted a 2-for-4 line. Sarah Boyda and Moroski both tallied multiple hits for the AMCATS, who received a strong complete game pitching effort from Nicole Hackenson.
In the opener, Johnson blasted a crucial three-run home run as part of a 4-for-4 effort, powering WPI to a 5-2 triumph. The senior had six hits combined on the afternoon.
Following a scoreless first inning, the Engineers broke through for four in the second to take charge. After a Beaulieu single and back-to-back doubles from Roche and Martilla, Johnson provided the key hit in the inning, a three-run bomb that staked starter Allie Hardy (West Townsend, MA) to a four-run lead. The Engineers continued to thrive on the long-ball in the opener, as Fitton launched a solo shot in the third for a 5-0 WPI advantage.
The AMCATS reached Hardy for single runs in the fifth and sixth, including a RBI single by Boyda and a home run from Jill Hurley (), but the sophomore hung onto the lead en route to her second win of the season. Hardy went five plus innings in game one, allowing the two runs (one earned) on nine hits to improve to 2-1 in 2010. She struck out four Anna Maria batters over that span and allowed no walks. Flaherty came on to close out the AMCATS by pitching a scoreless final two innings. The sophomore pitcher allowed one hit while walking two and striking out two in relief before tossing seven innings in the day's second game.
WPI Softball will continue its road slate next week with a contest at Amherst on Wednesday and a NEWMAC doubleheader at Springfield on Friday before returning home for the team's official home opener on Saturday March 27th vs. Smith. Anna Maria is back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Worcester State for a 5pm doubleheader.

2009 Recap
Despite capturing 10 Conference victories in 2009, the Anna Maria College softball team finished just one spot out of the playoffs. Still, the team had plenty of positives to take away from the year, which has created an air of optimism heading into 2010. First, the team set records for most runs scored (119) and most stolen bases (30) since 2003. The team also displayed the ability to compete with some of the best teams in the Conference, earning wins over both Salve Regina University and Eastern Nazarene College. Finally, the team had no seniors and just one junior on the ’09 roster, which means the club’s core group of players will remain intact and have the opportunity to grow together over the next several seasons.
A main part of that core, Co-Captain Sarah Boyda (Oxford, Mass.) followed up her record setting freshman season, in which she set the program’s all-time marks for runs scored and walks in a season, with a strong sophomore campaign. As the team’s leadoff hitter, Boyda paced the AMCATS with a .283 batting average, 26 runs scored, 34 hits, and 12 stolen bases, while also finishing second in walks (17) and on-base percentage (.377). She strung together an eight-game hitting streak in April and ended the season by collecting at least one hit in 14 of her last 16 games, including 10 of her last 11. Always a menace on the base paths, Boyda scored multiple runs in eight games and was caught stealing just once all season. As a result, she was selected as a member of the All-TCCC Second Team.
The addition of freshman Mary Moroski (Worcester, Mass.) was a major factor in AMC’s improved lineup this season. Moroski led the club in home runs (4), triples (2), runs batted in (22), total bases (50), on base percentage (.397), slugging percentage (.481), and set a program record for walks in a season with 18. She was selected as the TCCC Rookie of the Week on April 13th and earned All-TCCC Honorable Mention.
Along with Boyda and Moroski, sophomore Emily Nugent (Worcester, Mass.) rounded out the AMC outfield, starting all 38 games in 2009.
The AMCATS also received strong production up the middle from starting second baseman Allyssa Boykin (Worcester, Mass.) and shortstop Becky Mercurio (Worcester, Mass.). Playing in her sophomore season, Boykin led the team with six doubles while also finishing second on the club in runs (20), home runs (3), runs batted in (13), on base percentage (.373), and total bases (44). Selected as the Team MVP, Mercurio did all the little things that help a team win, including collecting a team-high nine sacrifice hits. She showed terrific range in the field while also finishing second on the team with 32 hits and five stolen bases.
At the corners, the AMCATS were manned by Jill Hurley (Worcester, Mass.) and Samantha Putis (Charlton, Mass.). Hurley started all 38 games for the AMCATS at the hot corner, finishing third on the team in hits, doubles, home runs, runs batted in, total bases, on base percentage, and slugging percentage. Her season was highlighted by a 6-for-7 performance in a doubleheader sweep versus Regis. Putis started 27 games for the AMCATS, finishing second on the team with a .961 fielding percentage.
Dominique Marchand (Mendon, Mass.) and Ashley Scionti (Prospect, Conn.) completed the AMCATS 2009 starting lineup. Between catcher, first base, and designated player, Marchand made 32 starts for AMC, leading the team with a .970 fielding percentage. Scionti made all 21 of her starts in the outfield, including a 2-for-3 performance versus Wheelock in which she collected two doubles, two runs batted in, and two runs scored.
The Anna Maria pitching staff consisted of just two players; Holly Renna (Charlton, Mass.) and Nicole Hackenson (Mendon, Mass.). Renna went the distance in all 18 of her starts, finishing 7-12 with a 4.76 ERA. She tossed a complete-game shutout versus Regis in which she surrendered just four hits while striking out six. Hackenson made 20 starts during the year, going 5-14 with 15 complete games and recording a 4.22 ERA. On March 30th, Hackenson was selected as the TCCC Pitcher of the Week after compiling a 0.58 ERA over 12 innings of work, allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out 11.
As a young club, the AMC softball team should continue to improve over the next several seasons. Heading into 2010, the AMCATS will be returning their entire roster including seven juniors and five sophomores. After barely missing the playoffs in ’09, the team is eying a return to postseason play in ’10. |
Boyda and Moroski earn TCCC recognition
All-TCCC Team
PAXTON, Mass. – The Commonwealth Coast Conference Commissioner Gregg Kaye announced Thursday that Anna Maria College sophomore Sarah Boyda (Oxford, Mass.) was selected as a member of the All-TCCC Softball Second Team, while freshman Mary Moroski (Worcester, Mass.) earned Honorable Mention.
As the leadoff hitter for the AMCATS, Boyda led the club in batting average (.283), runs (26), hits (34), and stolen bases (12). She strung together an eight-game hitting streak in April and ended the season by collecting at least one hit in 14 of her last 16 games, including 10 of her last 11. Always a menace on the base paths, Boyda scored multiple runs in eight games and was caught stealing just once all season.
Moroski had a very impressive freshman season for the AMCATS, leading the club in home runs (4), triples (2), runs batted in (22), total bases (50), walks (18), slugging (.481), and on base percentage (.397). After a slow start, Moroski collected a hit in 19 of the team’s final 25 games. She was selected as the TCCC Rookie of the Week on April 13th after compiling a .667 batting average and a 1.167 slugging percentage. With a playoff berth still possible, Mary ended the season on a high note, leading the AMCATS to a sweep over Gordon College by going 5-for-8 with six RBI.
The AMCATS will be returning their entire roster next year, and after missing the playoffs by mere percentage points this season, AMC is poised to be a top contender in the Conference in 2010. |
