Women's lacrosse receives TCCC Sportsmanshp Award

PAXTON, Mass. - The Anna Maria College women's lacrosse team was honored as the recipient of The Commonwealth Coast Conference Team Sportsmanship Award, as announced by Commissioner Gregg Kaye on Friday.
The AMCATS received the award in honor of the level of respect which they showed to both their opponents and the sport of women’s lacrosse. Gracious in victory as well as defeat, the Anna Maria College women’s lacrosse team represented the school and the NCAA with class and dignity during the 2010 season.
In just their second year of existence, and their first as part of the TCCC, the AMCATS continued to grow and improve as a program. In what may have been the highlight of the year, the women’s lacrosse team captured their first TCCC win with a 15-8 victory over Regis College. Captain Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass.) led the way for the AMCATS, collecting an AMC record 10 points and eight goals during the contest.
The AMCATS will be returning 16 players next season, including their four top scorers and their starting goalie, as they look to continue moving forward as a program. |
Golden Bears top AMCATS on Senior Day

PAXTON, Mass. – The Western New England College women’s lacrosse team received goals from 10 different players as the Golden Bears defeated Anna Maria College by the score of 20-8 during Senior Day at AMCAT field on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Golden Bears to 10-6 (8-2 TCCC), while the AMCATS conclude their season at 2-14 (1-10 TCCC).
Before their final game, seniors Shayna Arasimowicz (Pittsfield, Mass.), Jennifer McCabe (Westborough, Mass.), Meghan McCabe (Westborough, Mass.), and Jess Standish (Barnstable, Mass.) were each honored as part of the Senior Day festivities for all of their contributions to Anna Maria College Athletics throughout the years.
Sophomore Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass.) led the AMCATS with a team-high three goals in the loss, while freshman Alexandra Smith (Norwell, Mass.) added two goals of her own, and senior Jess Standish, freshman Michel’le St. Pierre (Seekonk, Mass.), and sophomore Amelia Richard (Mashpee, Mass.) each chipped in with one tally apiece.
The Golden Bears were paced by Jeanmarie Barbato (Huntington Station, N.Y.), who led all players with five points on three goals and two assists. Freshman Carolyn Gilland (Middlebury, Conn.) also played well, scoring a game-high four goals, while freshman Julianne Green (Bay Shore, N.Y.) added three tallies of her own and junior Marisa Hebert (Saco, Maine) contributed two assists while grabbing 20 draw controls. Nicole Poli (Medfield, Mass.) made a strong contribution to the win as well, earning four points on a goal and three assists while also grabbing a game-high five groundballs.
The Golden Bears came out of the gate strong in the first half, scoring the first seven goals of the match, including three by Barbato and two by freshman Megan Doyle (Putnam Valley, N.Y.).
WNEC continued to pour it on throughout the first half, building a 17-5 lead. Gilland scored the Golden Bear’s final four goals of the half, including two inside of the period’s final minute.
Each team scored three times in the second half, as WNEC held on for the 20-8 victory.

Bison hold off AMCATS, 13-12

DUDLEY, Mass. – The Nichols College women’s lacrosse team edged Anna Maria, 13-12, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference game Wednesday at Vendetti Field. The Bison improve to 4-8 overall and 2-6 in TCCC action, while the AMCATS drop to 2-13 overall and 1-9 in TCCC games after losing their eighth straight game.
Chelsea Shaughnessy (Halifax, Mass.) recorded a career-high six points on five goals and an assist for the Bison. Krista-Jean Forand (Plymouth, Mass.) added three goals and three assists, while Lindsay Gustafson (Pepperell, Mass.) scored twice.
Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass.) scored scored five goals for the AMCATS, while Amanda Hevy (No. Brookfield, Mass.) and Alexandra Smith (Norwell, Mass.) added three each.
Nichols led, 7-1, with less than nine minutes left in the first half, but the AMCATS outscored their hosts, 6-1, over the remaining time to get within one at the break.
Hevy and Schebel scored in the opening 7:24 of the second half to put the AMCATS up, 9-8, but the Bison rattled off the next three in less than three minutes to retake the lead at 10-9 by the 11:20 mark.
The teams traded goals through the 24-minute mark with Nichols leading, 13-12 on a Shaughnessy tally at 24:18.
Mary Michaud (Agawam, Mass.) made 13 saves, while Lourdes Pena (Lawrence, Mass.) stopped five shots for the AMCATS.
Anna Maria held an 18-8 advantage in draw controls, and won the groundball battle at a 24-21 clip. The AMCATS scored on four of 13 free-position attempts, while the Bison converted four of five attempts.
Nichols is back in action on Friday in a 6 p.m. TCCC game at University of New England. Anna Maria hosts Western New England College Saturday at 11 a.m. for a conference game.

Eagles edge past AMCATS, 8-7

North Kingston – Sophomore Natalie Bates (N. Kingston, R.I.) registered four goals on the way to an 8-7 victory over Anna Maria Monday afternoon in a nonconference matchup played at Eagle Field.
Stephanie Zeman (Jefferson Township, N.J.) added two goals and one assist as the second-year Eagles improved to 3-6 overall and won their second straight.
Kaylea Parkin (Red Hook, N.Y) and Eveline Lopes (Dorchester, Mass.) added solo scores.
Laura Gianetti (Asburnham, Mass.) was solid in goal, finishing with nine saves.
Sophomore Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.) led the AmCats (2-12) with five goals, while Michelle St. Pierre (Attleboro, Mass.) added two goals.
Lourdes Pena (Lawrence, Mass.) made five saves for Anna Maria.
The Amcats jumped to a good start in the opening half, scoring five times for a 5-3 lead at the half including four from Hevey.
But the Eagles took control getting five in the second half including three from Bates as well as single scores from Zeman and Lopes.
Bates staged a three goal rally including the game-tying goal in the 53rd on a free-position shot sealed it with two more free position goals within two minutes of each other.
The game came down to free-position shots. The Amcats were just 1-4 while DWC finished 3-5 for free-positions shots.
The Eagles return to action Wednesday as they travel to Green Mountain College at 4:30 p.m.
Anna Maria visits Nichols on Wednesday beginning at 4:00 p.m.

Hawks blank AMCATS in WLAX action

PAXTON, Mass. – Junior Claire Halliday (Trenton, N.J.) led all players with four points on four goals, while goalies Amanda Magee (Columbus, N.J.) and Justine Sullivan (Norwell, Mass.) combined for a shutout, as the Roger Williams women’s lacrosse team defeated Anna Maria College by a score of 13-0 in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference contest at AMCAT Field on Tuesday night. With the win, the Hawks improve their record to 7-3 (5-1 TCCC), while the AMCATS fall to 2-10 (1-7 TCCC).
Halliday paced the Hawks with her four goals, while Danica Delia (Norwalk, Conn.), Jessie Alden (Bourne, Mass.), and Lauren Ferri (Northport, N.Y.) each had three point on two goals and an assist. Magee made eight saves to earn the victory in net, improving her record to 7-3 on the year.
The Hawks controlled this one from the start, scoring seven unanswered goals in the first half of play. Halliday netted three of her four goals in the opening half, while Jessie Alden, Annie Alvord (Yorktown, N.Y.), Danica Delia, and Dana Wilfahrt (Hamilton, Mass.) each chipped in with one goal apiece.
Roger Williams tacked on another six unanswered goals in the second half, including two by Lauren Ferri, to coast to the 13-0 victory.
The Hawks will take the field again on Thursday when they host New England College at 4:00 pm, while the AMCATS return to action on Saturday, traveling to face Gordon College at 12:00 pm. |
Seahawks soar past AMCATS, 14-3

NEWPORT, R.I. – Freshman Kelly Burke (Georgetown, Mass.) scored four goals and senior Erika Curtin (Huntington, N.Y.) added three more to lead the Salve Regina University women’s lacrosse team to a 14-3 win over Anna Maria College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) women’s lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at the Lawrence Avenue field.
Senior Sarah Baker (Summit, N.J.) added a goal and six assists for the Seahawks (2-7, 1-4 TCCC), who snapped a four-game losing streak and picked up their first conference win of the season. Sophomore Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass.) tallied twice for the AMCats (2-9, 1-6 TCCC).
The Seahawks raced out to an 8-0 lead in the first 18:18 of the contest behind three goals from Burke and a pair from Curtin. Anna Maria answered with three-straight tallies – including two from Schebel – before SRU sophomore Lia Lanzo (Holmdel, N.J.) and senior Angelina Campbel (Falmouth, Maine.) closed the half with goals to give the Seahawks a 10-3 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Seahawks scored three times in the opening 3:59 of the stanza to build a 10-goal lead (13-3). Senior Erin Donnelly (South Windsor, Conn.) capped the scoring with her first of the season at 11:08.
“Overall, this was a great team effort,” said Salve Regina head coach Jen Eldridge. “We pulled together today and were able to try a few different things. It feels good to get our first conference win.”
Senior Nicole Viola (Scarborough, Maine.) finished with a goal and two assists for Salve Regina while Lanzo scored twice and sophomore Sarah Livingston (Westford, Mass.) also added a goal. Freshman Danielle Malconian (Belmont, Mass.) led the team with three ground balls while Campbell and senior Whitney Loeb (Hollis, N.H.) each won three draw controls.
For Anna Maria, sophomore Amelia Richard (Mashpee, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season while classmate Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.) dished out an assist. Senior Jennifer McCabe (Westborough, Mass.), along with juniors Sarah Moore (Holden, Mass.) and Heidi Toce (Ashland, Mass.), each collected a team-high two ground balls.
Salve Regina outshot the AMCats 42-17 on the afternoon and won 13 of 19 draw controls. They also converted on all but two of their clearing attempts (14-of-16). Sophomore Natalie Balletta (Leominster, Mass.) made five saves to earn her second win of the season while freshman Lourdes Pena (Lawrence, Mass.) recorded 17 saves.
The Seahawks return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Springfield, Mass. for a 4 p.m. contest at Western New England. The AMCats host Roger Williams Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Pilgrims sail past AMCATS for 20-5 victory

PAXTON, Mass. – The New England College women’s lacrosse team received goals from nine different players as they defeated Anna Maria College by the score of 20-5 in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup at AMCAT field on Wednesday night. The Pilgrims improve to 4-5 (3-2 TCCC) with the win, while the AMCATS fall to 2-8 (1-5 TCCC).
Sophomore Chantale Lacroix (Manchester, N.H.) and freshman Katie Palasz (Granby, Mass.) paced the Pilgrim offense with six points apiece. Lacroix had a team-high four goals to go along with two assists, while Palasz dished out a team-best four assists while also adding two scores. Freshman Rebecca Harvey (Natick, Mass.), sophomore Sam Aucoin (Henniker, N.H.), and sophomore Amanda Naime (York, Maine) also played well, each contributing four points in the win. Goalkeeper Alexandra DiRico (Limerick, Pa.) earned the victory in net for the Pilgrims, making 10 saves while improving her season record to 4-5.
The AMCATS were led by sophomore Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass.) who had a team-high five points on four goals and an assist, while also leading all players with seven draw controls. Freshman Alexandra Smith (Norwell, Mass.) and sophomore Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.) added a goal and an assist, respectively, while freshman Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, Mass.) grabbed a team-high four ground balls. Freshman Lourdes Pena (Lawrence, Mass.) did her best to keep Anna Maria in the game by making 20 saves on the night, including 14 in the first half alone.
The Pilgrims took the early 1-0 lead, with Lacroix scoring the game’s first goal just under four minutes into the contest.
The AMCATS answered by scoring three of the next four goals, including two by Schebel and one from Smith, to grab a 3-2 advantage.
The lead didn’t last long, as the Pilgrims exploded with an 8-1 run to close the half. NEC had six different players score during the run, receiving two tallies from both Harvey and Aucoin, to go into the break holding a 10-4 advantage.
The Pilgrims held a significant edge in both shots (29-13) and ground balls (22-9) during the first half.
The second half began the same way as the first, as Lacroix and Schebel each exchanged goals to bring the score to 11-5.
From there, the Pilgrims took control, scoring nine unanswered-goals to capture the 20-5 victory. Senior Lauren Bickford (Lebanon, Maine) and Chantale Lacroix each had two goals during the half, while Katie Palasz contributed two assists.
The Pilgrims play again on Thursday when they travel to face Smith in a non-conference game at 5:00 pm. The AMCATS will return to action on Saturday, battling Salve Regina on the road in a TCCC matchup beginning at 1:00 pm.

Murphy leads Chargers over AMCATS

NEW LONDON, NH - April 5, 2010 - The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team defeated the Anna Maria Amcats 18-2 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Monday. The win moves the Chargers to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in TCCC play.
The Chargers scored early and often in the first half of play. Colby-Sawyer scored 42 seconds into the first half when Brittney Murphy scored her 23rd goal of the season on a pass from Laurel Bauer. The Amcats responded 24 seconds later when Katie Schebel (So., Ludlow, Mass.) scored her 30th goal of the season on a free position attempt. However, the Chargers quickly regained the lead when Ashley Reis scored on a free position ball. Colby-Sawyer would then go on to score the next 14 goals. Schebel would add her 31st of the year for the Amcats in the second half, but consistent ball control from the Charger kept the action in the Amcats half of the field for the majority of the second half. The Chargers would add two late goals and go on for the 18-2 win.
Eleven different players scored for the Chargers. Murphy had four goals and two assists. Elaina Kennedy found the net three times and Ashley Reis had two goals and an assist. Ekta Sampson made five saves on seven attempts.
For the Amcats, Katie Schebel scored twice, both on free position attempts and goalie Lourdes Pena (Fr., Lawrence, Mass) made 19 saves.
The Chargers return to action on Wednesday April 7 when they travel to Curry College. First draw is set for 6:30pm.

Colonels down AMCATS in TCCC battle

MILTON, Mass.-Curry College scored fourteen first have goals en route to an 22-5 victory over Anna Maria College on Saturday in Milton. With the win the Colonels improve to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Amcats fall to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference.
Senior attackers Ashley Hansbury (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) and Carissa Lauyer led the Colonels with ten points apiece. Hansbury found the back of the net five times while dishing out five assists and Lauyer scored twice and added a career high eight assists.
Curry got goals from ten different players. Junior attacker Elissa Bulgatz (North Brook, Ill.) and Senior midfielder Rachel Robichaud (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) each finished the day with four points. Bulgatz had three goals and an assist and Robichaud and two goals and two assists. Other multiple point scorers were junior attack Jessie Koffman (Andover, Mass.), and freshmen Courtney Shaffer (Hull, Mass.), Anna Bottary (Hull, Mass.) and Nicole Sullivan (Arlington, Mass.). Junior attack Maria Lynch (Billerica, Mass.), junior midfielder Kelly Champagne and freshman attack Brittany Gower (Warwick, RI) contributed one goal. Curry, which held a 17-11 advantage in draw controls also caused 17 turnovers.
Anna Maria scored one first half goal and three second.
Four different players scored for the Amcats. Senior attack Jennifer McCabe (Westborough, Mass.), junior defender Sarah Moore (Holden, Mass.) and sophomore midfielder Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass) and sophomore attack Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.) each scored once.
Curry played three different goalies in net, junior goalie Maria Lynch (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) finished with 1 save with no goals against, junior Kate Noe (Greenwich, Mass.) saved four shots and allowed two goals and freshman Emily LeBlanc (Abington, Mass.) allowed two goals without making a stop. In net for Anna Maria was freshman Michelle St. Pierre who made nine saves for the loss.
The Colonels will travel to the University of New England on Tuesday, March 30 for a 6:30 p.m game time. Anna Maria travels to Colby-Sawyer on April 5 for a 3:30 start.

Schebel's record night leads AMC to first TCCC win

PAXTON, Mass. – Sophomore Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass.) set the school record for points (10) and goals (8) in a match, as the Anna Maria College women's lacrosse team captured the program’s first-ever The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory with a 15-8 win over the Pride of Regis College. Schebel also finished with an impressive seven draw controls and five ground balls to help improve the AMCATS to 2-5 (1-2 TCCC) on the season, while Regis falls to 0-3 (0-2 TCCC).
Anna Maria jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead 12 seconds into the half, on an unassisted goal by Katie Schebel. Within five minutes, Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.) added her first score and Schebel collected her second to give the AMCATS a 3-0 lead.
The Pride cut the lead to 4-3 on two goals by Teresa Crevier (Milford, Mass.) and a score by Evonne Orozco (Waltham, Mass.), however Katie Schebel's fourth goal of the half gave the AMCATS a 5-3 lead heading into intermission.
Anna Maria held the advantage in shots (23-11), ground balls (15-12) and free-position shots (7-2), while the Pride did a better job of controlling the ball, as they committed only six turnovers to the AMCATS' nine.
Katie Schebel dominated the half, as she led all players in the period with five points, four goals, and four ground balls. Amanda Hevy and Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, Mass.) also contributed to the AMCATS’ first-half lead, as Hevy added a goal and Acosta collected four ground balls.
Teresa Crevier kept the Pride in the game, leading her team in goals (2), points (2) and ground balls (3). Evonne Orozco also added a goal and two groundballs, while Jillian DeFrancesco (Peabody, Mass.) kept the game within striking distance by making 10 saves for the visitors in the half.
The AMCATS stormed out of the gates in the second-half, as Amanda Hevy and Katie Schebel each scored within the first minute of the period.
The AMCATS never looked back, going on a 10-1 run to build a 15-4 lead, highlighted by four goals from Schebel and a pair by Hevy.
Schebel added her career-high eighth goal with 12 minutes remaining in the contest, while both Ashlene Patten (Norfolk, Mass.) and Sandy Acosta each scored their first-collegiate goals during the 10-1 run.
The Pride did their best to mount a late comeback, going on a four-goal run to end the game, including three-consecutive goals by Teresa Crevier and Maria Pino's (Revere, Mass.) first goal of the contest.
Anna Maria was led by the star performance of Katie Schebel who led all players in points (10), goals (8), assists (2), and draw controls (7), while finishing second amongst all players with five ground balls. Not to be out shined, Amanda Hevy added a hat-trick of her own while grabbing three draw controls. Sandy Acosta led all players with six ground balls in addition to adding her first collegiate score.
The Pride were led by the outstanding play of Teresa Crevier, who had a team-high six points, six goals, six ground balls, and three draw controls. Evonne Orozco also added two points on one goal and an assist for the visitors.
The AMCATS finished the contest holding advantages in shots (44-21), ground balls (24-17) free-position shots (12-4), and draw controls (16-9).
Both teams continue conference play on Saturday, with the Pride traveling to Nichols at 1:00 pm, while the AMCATS take to the road to face conference foe Curry at 1:30 pm.

Anna Maria falls to UNE, 15-2

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Eleven different players recorded goals as the University of New England won its The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) opener, 15-2, over Anna Maria College in women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The Nor'easters (2-1) raced out to a 9-0 lead midway through the first half. Senior Mallory Long (Lewiston, Maine), junior Danielle Cate (Boscawen, N.H.), and sophomore Jenna Barton (Wolfeboro, N.H.) each scored twice during the stretch.
The cushion was 10 (11-1) at halftime, as UNE held advantages in shots (32-3), draw controls (12-1), and ground balls (31-10) in the opening frame.
Junior Abby Slavin (Hooksett, N.H.) added a pair of second-half scores for UNE, which finished with a 48-5 edge in shots. Senior Emily Harvey (Standish, Maine) led the strong defensive effort for the Nor'easters, finishing with career-high 10 ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Junior Tara Geraghty (Barrington, R.I.) and first-year Jillian Aslin (Hampton, N.H.) split time in goal for UNE, each registering one save.
Sophomore Amanda Hevy (Brookfield, Mass.) and senior Jennifer McCabe (Westborough, Mass.) tallied the goals for the Amcats (1-4, 0-2 TCCC). First-year Lourdes Pena (Lawrence, Mass.) turned aside 21 shots.
The Nor'easters travel to Manchester, N.H. Tuesday for a conference match-up with Colby-Sawyer College (7 p.m.). Anna Maria returns to action Monday for a non-conference date at Simmons College (7 p.m.).

PAXTON, Mass. – Avenging the loss from last year’s program opener, the Anna Maria College women’s lacrosse team defeated Pine Manor College, 19-16, in a non-conference matchup at AMCAT Field on Thursday night. The win was the first of the year for the AMCATS, who improve to 1-3 overall, while the loss drops the Gators to 0-2 to begin the season.
Sophomore Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass.) led the way for the AMCATS, matching a career-high and topping all players with seven goals, in addition to grabbing seven draw controls. Sophomore Amanda Hevy also played well, collecting six points on four goals and two assists. Junior Sarah Moore (Holden, Mass.) chipped in with three goals, while junior Mackenzie Coakley (Millbury, Mass.) and freshman Alexandra Smith (Norwell, Mass.) added two goals each. Freshman Alyssa Molinares (Westbrook, Conn.) rounded-out the scoring for AMC, while freshman Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, Mass.) grabbed a team-high seven ground balls. Freshman goalkeeper Lourdes Pena (Lawrence, Mass.) earned her first collegiate victory in net for the AMCATS, making six saves on the night.
The Gators were paced by sophomore Molly Manley (East Greenbush, N.Y.) who had seven points on six goals and an assist. Sophomore Beth Deegan (Philadelphia, Pa.) had a strong all-around game, scoring five goals while grabbing a team-high seven draw controls and seven ground balls. Senior Elaine Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) contributed two goals and an assist, while freshman Myrell Redmond (Baltimore, Md.) and sophomore Kasey Jeronimo (Swansea, Mass.) each had two points. Freshman goalkeeper Colleen Tencza (South Meridan, Conn.) played well in net despite taking the loss, making 10 saves during the game.
The AMCATS broke through first when Mackenzie Coakley scored her first collegiate goal to put Anna Maria on top 1-0. The AMCATS scored four more unanswered goals, including two by Hevy, to take an early 5-0 advantage halfway through the first period.
The Gators responded with consecutive goals from Manley and Redmond less than a minute apart to close the gap to three.
The AMCATS then went on a 4-0 run, getting two goals from Schebel and one from Coakley, in addition to Alexandra Smith’s first career tally.
With AMC leading 9-2, the Gators rallied back, ending the first period with six unanswered goals, including three by Deegan and two from Manley, to go into the break trailing just 9-8.
Anna Maria came out strong in the second half, scoring six of the first seven goals in the period to take a 15-9 lead with 17:35 left to play.
The Gators once again battled back, scoring four of the next five goals, including two more from Manley, to close the gap to within three at 16-13.
However, the AMCATS were able to hold off the Gators the rest of the way, matching them goal-for-goal, including Alyssa Molinares’ first collegiate tally, to capture the 19-16 victory.
The AMCATS outshot the Gators 39-26 and grabbed 35 ground balls to PMC’s 23, while Pine Manor held a 21-15 edge in draw controls.
Both teams will return to the action on Saturday. The Gators will travel to face St. Joseph’s at 3:30 pm, while the AMCATS will battle the University of New England on the road starting at 1:00 pm.

Lasers shoot past Anna Maria, 20-10

PAXTON, Mass. – Junior Tina Canavan (Stonington, Conn.) had a game-high eight points on six goals and two assists, leading the Lasell College women’s lacrosse team to a 20-10 victory over Anna Maria College in a Division III matchup at AMCAT Field on Tuesday evening. With the win, the Lasers improve to 3-2 on the season, while the loss drops the AMCATS to an 0-3 start.
In addition to leading all players in points, Canavan also collected a game-high eight ground balls and seven draw controls, while causing five turnovers. Freshman Ashley Slattery (Weymouth, Mass.) also played well for Lasell, netting three goals and dishing out two assists. Junior Chelsea Caren (Redding, Conn.) added three goals of her own, while Andrea Ward (Hingham, Mass.), Rebecca Stanton (Agawam, Mass.), and Neila Kudla (Groton, Mass.) each chipped in with two goals apiece. Junior Kristin Coderre (Monson, Mass.) earned the win in net for the Lasers, making nine saves and improving her record to 2-1 on the year.
The AMCATS were led by sophomore Katie Schebel’s (Ludlow, Mass.) team-best six goals, while Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.) added four points on three goals and an assist, in addition to collecting a team-high six draw controls. Junior Sarah Moore (Holden, Mass.) also scored for AMC while freshman Dina Andre (White Plains, N.Y.) added an assist, and senior Shayna Arasimowicz (Pittsfield, Mass.) grabbed a team-high four ground balls.
The two teams begin the first half trading goals, battling to a four-all tie. AMC received two goals from both Schebel and Hevy, while Lasell got tallies from Canavan, Caren, Lauren Wigmore (Scituate, Mass.), and Ward.
The Lasers then took control by running off five consecutive goals and building a 9-4 advantage. Canavan and Stanton each had two goals during the run, while Slattery added a goal and an assist.
Schebel finally ended the run with an unassisted tally with just 51 seconds remaining in the half, sending the AMCATS into the break trailing 9-5.
Lasell came out strong in the second half, scoring three goals in the first three minutes of action, with Canavan, Ward, and Slattery all finding the back of the net.
The AMCATS responded with consecutive goals by Schebel within 40 seconds of each other, cutting the Lasers’ lead to 12-7.
However, the Lasers came right back, scoring seven of the next eight goals to put the game away and earn the 20-10 victory.
For the game, Lasell held a healthy advantage in shots (36-35), ground balls (23-12), and draw controls (20-12).
Both teams will be back in action on Thursday with the Lasers hosting Rhode Island College at 1:00 pm, and the AMCATS hosting Pine Manor at 7:00 pm.

AMCATS drop home opener to Mustangs, 19-4

PAXTON, Mass. – Junior Jen Thompson (Easton, Md.) scored a game-high 10 goals, propelling the Mount Ida women’s lacrosse team to a 19-4 victory over Anna Maria College during the Mustangs’ program debut at AMCAT Field on Thursday evening. The Mustangs improve to 1-0 with the win, while the AMCATS drop to 0-2 on the season.
Thompson paced the Mustangs with her 10 goals, putting 13 of her 16 shots on goal. Junior Danielle Chuba (Wrightstown, N.J.) also played well, collecting seven points on six goals and an assist, while also grabbing a team-high six ground balls. Freshmen Stephanie Hill (Madison, Conn.) and Roshnilde Lauriston (Taunton, Mass.) chipped in with three points apiece, while goalkeeper Devyn Frank (Mystic, Conn.) earned the win in net, making seven saves on the evening.
The AMCATS were led by sophomore Amanda Hevy’s (North Brookfield, Mass.) team-high three goals, while junior Sarah Moore (Holden, Mass.) added a score of her own. Sophomore Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass.) also played well for AMC, grabbing three draw controls and leading all players with seven ground balls. Freshman goalkeeper Lourdes Pena (Lawrence, Mass.) came into the game with 12 minutes remaining in the first half and went on to make six saves in net for the AMCATS.
The AMCATS jumped on the board early in the first half, as Hevy scored on a free position shot after just 16 seconds of action.
The Mustangs then grabbed the lead on consecutive unassisted goals by Thompson less than two minutes apart.
After Hevy tied the score on her second free position goal of the half, the Mustangs responded by running off six unanswered goals, including four from Thompson, to build an 8-2 advantage.
AMC received unassisted tallies from both Hevy and Moore before the end of the half, but went into the break trailing 9-4.
The Mustangs then took control in the second half, scoring 10 unanswered goals and outshooting the AMCATS 18-5 in the period to capture the 19-4 win in their program opener.
Mount Ida will take the field again on Saturday when they play Pine Manor at 1:00 pm at a neutral location, while Anna Maria will look to bounce back when they host Lasell on Tuesday at 4:00 pm.

AMCATS fall to Gulls in TCCC debut

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott College women’s lacrosse team had an impressive start to its 2010 campaign as the Gulls defeated Anna Maria College, 21-2, on Thursday night in The Commonwealth Coast Conference action held in Beverly, Mass. The Gulls improve to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the TCCC this season while the AMCATS drop their first game as a member of the TCCC and fall to 0-1, 0-1 TCCC.
Endicott wasted no time jumping all over AMC as the Gulls posted three goals in the first minute of play. Off the opening draw control, Kristen Micho (Syracuse, N.Y.) found a streaking Carin Czerniawski (Monroe, Conn.) to give the Gulls an early 1-0 lead only :15 seconds into the game. Off the very next draw control, a similar play developed but this time Valerie Feldman (Albany, N.Y.) found a cutting Molly Sowles (Cumberland, Maine) for a 2-0 advantage. Feldman then got into the score column as the senior attacker found herself alone in front of the net and used a quick stick fake for her first goal of the season.
Kellie Cunningham (Derry, N.H.) and Kristen Micho each scored, followed by a pair of goals from Morgan DeShaw (Danville, N.H.), to give the Gulls an early 7-0 lead. The AMCATS finally got on the board when Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass.) scored on a free position bounce shot to make it a 7-1 game.
The Gulls responded with a 7-0 run including two goals each from Micho and Brooke Neuman (Stamford, Conn.) while Czerniawski netted her second tally of the game with Morgan DeShaw adding another goal to record a hat-trick. Schebel ended the run with her second goal on another free position bounce shot as the Gulls ended the half with a 14-2 lead.
Endicott tacked on seven more goals in the second half and cruised to an easy 21-2 win.
The Gulls had 11 different players score a goal including Kelly Tierney (South Hadley, Mass.) who netted her first four career goals. Micho and DeShaw each added three goals apiece while Czerniawski and Meaghann Mellen (Londonderry, N.H.) each scored twice. Valerie Feldman scored a goal and added a game-high six assists while Micho and Czerniawski each had a pair of assists to go along with their scores. Kellie Cunningham grabbed a game-high six draw controls while DeShaw, Mellen and Holly Davis (Guilford, Conn.) each scooped up four ground balls. Leah Neff (South Berwick, Maine) picked up her first win of the season in net by making four saves.
Anna Maria was led by Katie Schebel’s two goals and four draw controls while Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.) and Shayna Arasimowicz (Pittsfield, Mass.) each picked up a pair of ground balls. Michel’le St. Pierre (Seekonk, Mass.) suffered the setback for the AMCATS while making four saves on 28 shots faced.
The Gulls return to action on March 11th when the Blue and Green host Babson College in Beverly, Mass. at 4:00 p.m. Anna Maria will look for its first win of the season when the AMCATS host Mount Ida, also on March 11th at 4:00 p.m.

2009 Recap
The AMC women’s lacrosse team exceeded expectations in their inaugural season by capturing two victories. Their first program win came in a 13-3 defeat of Daniel Webster College and was followed up with a 12-10 victory over Simmons two weeks later. Head Coach Mellissa Callender deserves a lot of credit for bringing the team together and guiding the AMCATS through in their first season.
Co-Captain Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass.) had an excellent freshman campaign in 2009, leading the team with 34 goals, 36 points, 33 ground balls, and 38 draw controls. Schebel scored seven goals in a game twice, including an eight-point performance in the program’s first victory versus Daniel Webster. For her terrific season she was selected as the Team MVP.
Along with Schebel, AMC boasted a talented group of midfielders that included freshman Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.), junior Meghan McCabe (Westborough, Mass.), sophomore Crystal Torres (Southbridge, Mass.), sophomore Heidi Toce (Ashland, Mass.), and freshman Marie Barral (Worcester, Mass.). Hevy had a team-best .739 shot on goal percentage, finishing second on the club in goals (16), points (17), and draw controls (20). Torres had a good year as well, tying for the team lead in assists and finishing second in groundballs while also ranking third on the squad in goals (11), and points (13). Barral rounded out the team’s “big four”, ranking third on the team with 16 draw controls while also scoring eight goals.
Senior Jezebel Gil (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior Jennifer McCabe (Westborough, Mass.) headed the AMC attack unit which included freshmen Sarah Kulbashian (Amherst, N.H.), Najwa Fares (Hull, Mass.), Kristina Breton (Worcester, Mass.), Natalie Perrotti (West Haven, Mass.), and Amelia Richard (Mashpee, Mass.). This young attack squad will have the opportunity to grow and gel together as a unit over the next three seasons.
At the other end, junior Co-Captain Shayna Arasimowicz (Pittsfield, Mass.) led the AMC defense which included junior Jess Standish (Barnstable, Mass.), and sophomores Sarah Moore (Holden, Mass.), Sarah Sforza (Trumbull, Conn.), and Hiliary Cutress (Webster, Mass.). The AMCAT defense was instrumental in the program’s first victory, holding Daniel Webster to just three goals on 17 shots.
In goal, freshman Katherine Chousa (Norwood, Mass.) started all 13 games for the AMCATS. Chousa earned both wins in net for AMC, including a 16-save effort versus Simmons. The tough freshman netminder made 160 saves on the season, averaging 16.21 per game.
After a successful first year, the AMCATS will have a lot to look forward to in 2010. For starters, the team will be joining the always competitive The Commonwealth Coast Conference with the likes of Endicott College and Roger Williams University. The club will also be unveiling a brand new synthetic turf stadium to host all of their home games. In addition, Melissa Callender has brought in an eager group of freshmen recruits to add depth to a roster returning four seniors, five juniors, and nine sophomores. With one full season under their belts, the AMCATS look forward to taking their program to the next level n 2010. |

Framingham, Mass. — The Framingham State College women’s lacrosse team ended the 2009 season at home today on Maple Street Field with a 15-2 win over the visiting AMCATS of Anna Maria College. With the win, the Rams finish the season at 7-7, while the AMCATS end their season at 2-11.
Junior attack Ashley Noonan (Mansfield, Mass.) led the Rams offense with three goals and finished the season with a team-high 56 points. Freshman attack Kerry Kiley (Mansfield, Mass.) added two goals and a game-high two assists. Kiley finished her first season for the Rams with a team-high 50 goals. Freshman Lauren McMullen (Bolton, Mass.) and sophomore Stephanie Corrales (Framingham, Mass.) chipped in two goals apiece, while Vicki Matthei (Chelmsford, Mass.), Kayla Sheehan (Watertown, Mass.), Rebecca L’Ecuyer (Lowell, Mass.), Kelleigh Sheehan (Rockland, Mass.), Jenna Plant (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Sam Laferriere (Billerica, Mass.) added single goals for the Rams.
Sophomore midfielder Crystal Torres (Southbridge, Mass.) scored both of Anna Maria’s goals on the day. Both tallies were unassisted. Freshman Katherine Chousa (Norwood, Mass.) had a busy day in net for the AMCATS as she faced 36 shots and made 18 saves on the day. Sophomore Allesha Kenyon (Westford, Mass.) picked up the win in net for the Rams as she made 12 stops.

Lyons maul AMCATS, 18-3

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (April 24, 2009) – Led by sophomore attacker Clara Raugei (Alpharetta, Ga./Wesleyan School), the Mount Holyoke College women’s lacrosse team closed out its regular season with a convincing 18-3 triumph over non-conference foe Anna Maria College this evening at the Mount Holyoke Turf Field. It was the first ever meeting between the two programs.
Seven players found the net for the Lyons, who tied their program record for largest margin of victory in a game. The mark was previously established in a 20-5 win over Whittier College in 2007. Mount Holyoke’s 18 goals, 10 assists and 28 points were all season highs.
The offensive outburst was highlighted by Raugei, who recorded six goals and one assist. Senior midfielder Ava Gottschall (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) and junior defender Kristen Cody (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) posted three goals and one assist apiece, while first year midfielder Alex Crean (West Hartford, Conn./Pomfret) dished out five helpers. Mount Holyoke finished with large advantages in shots (37-12), draw controls (13-10) and ground balls (33-17). It was the Lyons second consecutive victory.
Anna Maria was paced by first year midfielders Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass./North Brookfield) and Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass./Agawam), who amassed two points apiece. Hevy found the net twice, while Schebel contributed a goal and an assist.
Mount Holyoke recorded the first three goals of the night and led 11-2 at the break. The hosts then outscored Anna Maria 7-1 in the second stanza to put things away.
First year Jeanmarie Petersen (Sea Girt, N.J./The Peddie School) made her first career start between the pipes for the Lyons. She made four saves to improve to a perfect 2-0 on the year. At the other end, first year Katherine Chousa (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) turned away 12 shots for the Amcats.
Prior to the contest, Gottschall, along with classmates Ashley DeFlumere (Bryant Pond, Maine/Telstar Regional) and Susanna Wilcox (Wales, U.K./Howell’s School Llandaff) were recognized for their contributions to the Mount Holyoke program. Parents and friends joined the trio for the Senior Day celebration.
Mount Holyoke (5-10, 1-5 NEWMAC) will hit the road for a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament Quarterfinal round contest on Wednesday against a yet to be determined opponent. The tournament bracket will be released later this weekend. Anna Maria (2-10) is scheduled to round out its 2009 season at Framingham State College on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
