2009 Recap
The AMC women’s lacrosse team exceeded expectations in their inaugural season by capturing two victories. Their first program win came in a 13-3 defeat of Daniel Webster College and was followed up with a 12-10 victory over Simmons two weeks later. Head Coach Mellissa Callender deserves a lot of credit for bringing the team together and guiding the AMCATS through in their first season.
Co-Captain Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass.) had an excellent freshman campaign in 2009, leading the team with 34 goals, 36 points, 33 ground balls, and 38 draw controls. Schebel scored seven goals in a game twice, including an eight-point performance in the program’s first victory versus Daniel Webster. For her terrific season she was selected as the Team MVP.
Along with Schebel, AMC boasted a talented group of midfielders that included freshman Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.), junior Meghan McCabe (Westborough, Mass.), sophomore Crystal Torres (Southbridge, Mass.), sophomore Heidi Toce (Ashland, Mass.), and freshman Marie Barral (Worcester, Mass.). Hevy had a team-best .739 shot on goal percentage, finishing second on the club in goals (16), points (17), and draw controls (20). Torres had a good year as well, tying for the team lead in assists and finishing second in groundballs while also ranking third on the squad in goals (11), and points (13). Barral rounded out the team’s “big four”, ranking third on the team with 16 draw controls while also scoring eight goals.
Senior Jezebel Gil (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior Jennifer McCabe (Westborough, Mass.) headed the AMC attack unit which included freshmen Sarah Kulbashian (Amherst, N.H.), Najwa Fares (Hull, Mass.), Kristina Breton (Worcester, Mass.), Natalie Perrotti (West Haven, Mass.), and Amelia Richard (Mashpee, Mass.). This young attack squad will have the opportunity to grow and gel together as a unit over the next three seasons.
At the other end, junior Co-Captain Shayna Arasimowicz (Pittsfield, Mass.) led the AMC defense which included junior Jess Standish (Barnstable, Mass.), and sophomores Sarah Moore (Holden, Mass.), Sarah Sforza (Trumbull, Conn.), and Hiliary Cutress (Webster, Mass.). The AMCAT defense was instrumental in the program’s first victory, holding Daniel Webster to just three goals on 17 shots.
In goal, freshman Katherine Chousa (Norwood, Mass.) started all 13 games for the AMCATS. Chousa earned both wins in net for AMC, including a 16-save effort versus Simmons. The tough freshman netminder made 160 saves on the season, averaging 16.21 per game.
After a successful first year, the AMCATS will have a lot to look forward to in 2010. For starters, the team will be joining the always competitive The Commonwealth Coast Conference with the likes of Endicott College and Roger Williams University. The club will also be unveiling a brand new synthetic turf stadium to host all of their home games. In addition, Melissa Callender has brought in an eager group of freshmen recruits to add depth to a roster returning four seniors, five juniors, and nine sophomores. With one full season under their belts, the AMCATS look forward to taking their program to the next level n 2010. |
