The Leopards improve their record to 11-9 on the season and an impressive 7-2 in conference play, while the AMCATS fall to 8-13 overall and 3-6 in the TCCC.
The AMCATS came storming out of the gates, building a 33-13 lead in the first 16 minutes of play. The Leopards did their best to overcome seven treys by AMC, and went into the break trailing by 16.

The Leopards turned up the defensive intensity in the second half, cutting the AMCAT lead to 10 in the first six minutes of the period.

Senior forward Ryan Wilcox (West Granby, Conn.) led the Bison with 19 points and seven rebounds to come within 26 points of 1,000 on his career.
Wilcox scored the bulk of his points at the free throw line where he went 11-for-13, and of his seven boards, six came off the defensive glass. Joining him in double figures was recent 1,000-point club inductee Chris Paquin (Barre, Mass.), who scored 11 points. Mike Salis (Pelham, N.H.) pulled down seven rebounds, including five on the defensive glass.
Anthony Click (Springfield, Mass.) led the AMCATS with 15 points, and filled the stat sheet with three blocks, assists and steals to go with six rebounds. Junior De La Hoz (Lawrence, Mass.) put up 13 points.
The lead changed six times in the opening half, with the AMCATS using a 7-2 run to take their largest lead of the game at the midpoint of the stanza, 11-5, after a Javier Bristol (Haverhill, Mass.) layup. Pete Atkins (Gainesville, Fla.) rattled off five consecutive points to cut the Bison’s deficit to one before Wilcox sank a pair of free throws to give Nichols the lead. The Bison finished the half on a 12-4 run to hold a 34-24 advantage at the break.
Nichols led by as many as 20 in the second half after a Steve Galgano (Ansonia, Conn.) trey at the 14:17 mark, but a late run by the AMCATS turned the game into a one-possession affair. A Click layup at the 6:53 mark sparked a 14-4 run by the visitors that was capped by a De La Hoz three-pointer with 1:28 to play.
Nichols clung to a 60-57 lead and called a time out, after which a series of turnovers left the AMCATS wide open for a pair of layups, but Click couldn’t convert, and a foul sent Bryan Riley (West Boylston, Mass.) to the line. Riley sank both to give the Bison a five-point lead at 62-57, with 48 seconds left.
Click then hit a bucket under the basket and completed the three-point play to bring the AMCATS back within a possession, but Riley found his way to the line for a pair of swishes to push the Bison ahead, 64-60, with 35 seconds on the clock.
Rafael Candelario (Lawrence, Mass.) pulled up to hit a long three-pointer with 26 seconds left, again bringing Anna Maria within a possession, and this time within a point, but his following foul sent Riley back to the line where he sank another for the 65-63 final. Riley finished with nine points, seven of which came at the line.
Anna Maria held a 41-32 advantage on the glass, but it was the Bison who parlayed the AMCATS’ 24 turnovers into 21 points. Nichols shot just 67.6% from the free throw line, but scored 25 points from the stripe, including 17 in the second half.
Nichols is back in action in a 3 p.m. TCCC game at Gordon Saturday. Anna Maria hosts Wentworth Saturday in a 3 p.m. game.

Jon Chaloux (Barre, Vt.) led all scorers with eight points in the first-half, including two three-pointers to keep the Chargers close at the half. The AMCATS received a balanced contribution, including six points and seven rebounds from freshman Anthony Click (Springfield, Mass.), seven points from Junior De La Hoz (Lawrence, Mass.) , four points and four rebounds from junior Chris Pinsonault (Marlboro, Mass.) and four points and five rebounds from junior Derek Johnson (Worcester, Mass.).
The Chargers came storming out of the gate in the second half, going on an early 13-2 run to cut the AMCAT lead to just one. Will Bardaglio (Wayne, Maine.) scored 11 of the 13 points during the run, including three field goals from beyond the arc. Bardaglio was the star for the visitors, scoring 17of his game high 20 points in the second half, including five three-pointers in the second frame.
With 3:16 remaining, the AMCATS held a 54-48 advantage, however, two layups from freshman Jason Chevrefils (Manchester, N.H.) and a Bardaglio three- pointer gave the visitors a one-point advantage with 2:03 to go.
The next possession, Junior De La Hoz hit a three to regain the lead for the AMCATS with 1:33 to go.
With 42 seconds to go, Derek Johnson grabbed what looked to be a huge offensive rebound after a missed three-pointer by Junior De La Hoz, however, with 26 seconds remaining a two-point lead, the AMCATS couldn’t capitalize on a lay-up attempt.
After a Colby-Sawyer called a timeout, freshman Corey Willis (Easton, Mass.) swung the ball to David Rosso, who buried the open look on the near side wing for the game-winning three-pointer.
Colby-Sawyer shot a much-improved percentage in the second-half, out-shooting the AMCATS 42.9%-36.7% from field and more importantly, 35.3% (6-17) beyond the arc. Colby-Sawyer also matched the AMCATS physical play in the paint, as the AMCATS only outscored the Chargers 14-12 down low, while relinquishing 16 second chance points.
Will Bardaglio (20 points, six 3-pointers), Jon Chaloux (12 points), David Rosso (game-winning three pointer) starred for Colby-Sawyer, while Anthony Click (12 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists), Chris Pinsonault (9 points, 7 rebounds), Junior De La Hoz (10 points) and Ryan Joyal (10 points) contributed for the AMCATS.

Lancers outlast AMCATS in 3OT thriller, 93-90
 Pinsonault scored a season-high 27 points
Box Score
Worcester, MA --- Senior Maurice Horton (Detroit, MI) recorded his 11th double-double of the season with 27 points and 13 rebounds as he helped propel Worcester State to a 93-90 triumph this afternoon over local rival Anna Maria in non-conference men’s basketball action.
The Lancers have now won five straight over the AMCATS (6-8) and nine of their last 11 meetings since the 1997-98 season. The contest also marked the second time the Lancers have ever had a game go into five frames, with the last one coming in a 116-112 setback against Boston State (UMass Boston) in the winter of 1966.
Worcester State (7-7) was also paced by junior Dave Douillette (Bridgewater, MA) who notched 19 points with 7 boards while classmate Ryan Testagrossa (Athol, MA) added 18 points and 6 caroms. Sophomore Jamaal Atkins (Webster, MA) also grabbed 9 rebounds before he fouled out in the second overtime. Horton finished with a game-best 6 assists.
Junior Chris Pinsonault (Marlboro, MA) led five Anna Maria players in double-figures with 27 points with five three pointers. Third-year Junior De La Hotz (Lawrence, MA) tallied 18 points while freshman Anthony Click (Springfield, MA) and classmate Jeremy Ross (Holden, MA) chipped in with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Junior Derek Johnson (Worcester, MA/Doherty) paced the visitors with 12 points and 13 boards.
The AMCATS had a late 62-52 lead with 6:22 left in regulation before Worcester State went on a 12-2 run to tie the game up 64-64 four minutes later. At 1:43 De La Hoz converted a lay-up to put Anna Maria ahead by two before both teams traded free throws to make the score 67-65 with 62 seconds remaining.
The Lancers then went down the floor, ran a play and Douillette nailed an open jump-shot to send it into overtime.
Douillette began the first extra session the same way he ended regulation with a trey before De La Hoz responded with a three-pointer to knot the game 70-70 at the 3:19 mark. Both squads would trade shots from three point land before Pinsonault gave the AMCATS the two-point lead with a pair of free throws. The Lancers then promptly knotted the score with 70 seconds left on two points in the paint by Douillette.
Following a WSC timeout, Anna Maria had a sequence that saw two players miss layups before freshman Javier Bristol (Haverhill, MA) logged the go-ahead points with 35 seconds left (77-75). Atkins would finish with only four points for the Lancers, but he came up in the clutch to deliver a lay-up to bring the game into second overtime.
The AMCATS scored the first points of the second extra period with back-to-back field goals to go up by four at the 3:18 mark. A trey by Testagrossa got the lead back to one (81-80), but the visitors connected with a successful attempt from downtown by Ross and took advantage of a Lancer miscue to lead by six with 58 seconds remaining (86-80).
Worcester State then received a traditional three-point play by Horton before Testagrossa deflected the ensuing inbound pass up in the air and back to Hamilton just as WSC’s sideline called a timeout. After the break, Horton would tie the game for the 13th time with a three pointer with 30 ticks left to put the game into the third frame.
Ross started things off with a good lay-up before the freshman Tim Henault (Lunenburg, MA) registered his only points of the game with the go-ahead three-pointer (89-88) for WSC. With 1:27 remaining, Douillette put the Blue and Gold up by three, but the AMCATS would score a field goal on a conversion by Click to put the visitors behind by just one (91-90) with 59 seconds on the clock.
Both teams would turn the ball over once before Testagrossa finally came up with the ball on a steal and he was promptly fouled with 10 seconds left. After he drilled both of his attempts from the charity stripe to make it a three point game (93-90), Pinsonault had a golden opportunity to put the game into its fourth extra stanza, but his bid rimmed off of the basket to give Worcester State the hard fought victory.
The opening stanza saw the lead change hands nine times while there were also six ties. Ahead 26-24 with 3:08 left, the AMCATS would go on a 12-4 spurt to close out the opening half with the visitors up 35-28 at the intermission.
Anna Maria would lead by as many as 13 in the opening minutes of the second period (43-40) before both squads started to trade baskets until the Lancers big run to tie the score.
Worcester State ended the contest with advantages in total rebounds (53-49), offensive boards (24-18) and second chance points (16-8).
Both teams shot just over 40 percent for the game and very well from beyond the three point arc. The Lancers connected for 9 for 23 (39%) while the AMCATS went 12-for-28 from downtown (42%).
Testagrossa would set the school record for minutes played in one game with 52 out of a possible 55 minutes.
The two squads continue their respective league schedules on Saturday with afternoon games. Worcester State will play Framingham State on the road at 5 PM while Anna Maria entertains Colby-Sawyer with a 1 o’clock start time.

2008-2009 Recap
Starting four sophomores and a freshman for most of the year, the AMCATS’ young team showed a lot of promise during the 2008-2009 season. Although the team finished 6-19 overall and 3-10 in the TCCC, they demonstrated that they could compete with the top teams in the Conference. The AMCATS captured impressive victories over both Endicott College and Roger Williams University for the first time since the 2000-2001 season. The club also showed the ability to battle back from adversity, trailing at halftime in three of their six victories, including a thrilling 18-point second half comeback versus Rutgers-Camden during the Rivier Tournament.
Possessing the ability to take over a game, shooting guard Chris Pinsonault (Marlboro, Mass.) led AMC with 246 points during his sophomore year, averaging 11.7 per game. Pinsonault also had a team-high 37 steals and 43 three-pointers, shooting a club-best .443 from behind the arc. During a phenomenal week in February, he averaged 32.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.5 steals, and 3.0 assists over a two-game span, leading the AMCATS to victories over Roger Williams University and New England College. Pinsonault shot an uncanny 24-31 (.774) from the field and an even more impressive 11-14 (.786) from behind the arc. For his outstanding play, Chris was named The Commonwealth Coast Conference Player of the Week and the Eastern Collegiate Athletics Conference (ECAC) Division III Player of the Week. Pinsonault is just one of a handful of players in AMC program history to capture the ECAC Player of the Week Award.
Center Derek Johnson (Worcester, Mass.) finished the season with a team-high 147 rebounds and 36 blocks, while finishing second on the team with 244 points, averaging 9.8 per contest. Johnson started the season strong and was named to the Rivier All-Tournament Team after averaging 18.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks during the November tournament. Johnson will return for his junior season this year looking to instill more consistency to his game. DJ has the potential to be a breakout player for the AMCATS during the 09-10 season.
Point guard Junior De La Hoz (Lawrence, Mass.) ran the offense for the AMCATS in 08-09 and dished out a team-high 82 assists. Despite a lingering wrist injury, Junior started 24 of the teams 25 games, more than any other AMC player. With both Senior Captains leaving, De La Hoz will be expected to increase his role as a leader both on and off the court during his junior year.
Forwards Tyler Washington (Milford, Mass.) and Brad Peterson (North Kingstown, R.I.) completed the starting lineup during the 08-09 season. Peterson fought his way into the starting lineup as a freshman and averaged 8.0 points and 4.6 rebounds per game while finishing second on the team with 18 blocks. He was very efficient at the offensive end, leading the club with a .503 shooting percentage, sinking 73 of 145 attempts.
Sophomores Victor Ramos (Worcester, Mass.) and Ryan Joyal (Marlboro, Mass.) also made valuable contributions this season. Ramos played the role of the always important sixth-man for the AMCATS this season, while Joyal was consistently the first big man off the bench. Ramos played in 24 of AMC’s 25 games, starting in 11 of them. He gave the AMCATS a high-energy defender off the bench and also hit over 41% of his shots at the offensive end. Joyal played in 21 games this season while averaging nearly 18 minutes per contest. He is a hard worker underneath the basket at both ends of the court and finished the 08-09 season as the team’s best rebounder, averaging 6.0 boards per game.
Co-Captains Henry Rose (Coventry, R.I.) and Brandon DiTullio (Webster, Mass.) gave the AMCATS valuable senior leadership throughout the year. Both were recipients of the program’s Coach’s Award over the past two seasons, and were quality role models for the younger players on the team to follow.
Kurtis Bixby (Albion, Maine), Colin Purdon (Putnam, Conn.), and John Barbale (Charlton, Mass.) also made valuable contribution during the ’08-’09 season, giving Coach Conrad the benefits of having a deep bench.
For the first time in several years, the AMC roster will boast a solid core of upper classmen with seven juniors and one senior returning for the ‘09-‘10 season. Head Coach Shawn Conrad has also recruited a very talented freshman class that can contribute to the team immediately. Growing together as a team, the AMCATS will continue their goal of restoring tradition to the AMC basketball program. |
