2008-2009 Recap
New Head Coach Charlie Noonan was brought in to rebuild the program after a disappointing ‘07-‘08 season. In his first season, Noonan took a one-win team from a year ago and guided them to three-straight victories in the month of December alone.
One of the main reasons for the positive turnaround was the ‘08-‘09 freshman class, which included starters Samantha Ashton (Worcester, Mass.), Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.), and Mary Moroski (Worcester, Mass.). Ashton led the AMCATS by averaging a team-best 13.9 points, 2.1 assists, 1.9 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game, while also finishing second on the club in rebounding, grabbing 5.8 per contest. Ashton’s season came to an unfortunate end when she injured her knee in the team’s 16th game of the season. At the time of the injury, Ashton was leading all TCCC freshmen in scoring. Hevy had an outstanding freshman campaign as well, leading the team with 288 points, 48 steals, and 71 three-pointers. Hevy won consecutive TCCC Rookie of the Week Awards in the month of December after draining 26 treys and averaging 22.8 points per game over a five-game span. Her 71 three-pointers on the season ranked second among all Conference players. Moroski was also an instrumental part of the team, starting 21 of 25 games in her first year. Moroski led the team with a .762 free throw percentage and finished second on the club with 99 rebounds.
Sophomore Emily Nugent (Worcester, Mass.) and junior Maggie Sielawa (Webster, Mass.) completed the starting lineup. As the team’s starting point guard and Co-Captain, Nugent led the club in assists while also finishing third in scoring with 201 points. Sielawa gave the AMCATS a strong inside presence, leading the team with 218 rebounds. She finished 6th in the Conference by averaging 8.7 boards per game, and also ranked second in offensive rebounds by grabbing 3.72 per contest. In addition, Sielawa finished second on the team in both blocks and steals.
The AMCATS also got contributions from sophomores Crystal Torres (Southbridge, Mass.), Brenna Woods (Dudley, Mass.), and Sarah Moore (Worcester, Mass.), as well as freshmen Jonelle Eye (Webster, Mass.) and Marcia McCoy (Marlboro, Mass.).
As the team’s lone senior from the ‘08-‘09 roster, Co-Captain Karine Almeida (Brockton, Mass.) will be missed next season. “K” was the consummate team player and gave the younger players a strong leader to follow.
Entering his second season, Coach Noonan is excited about the incoming class of freshman recruits he has brought in. With a talented group of sophomores and all five starters returning, the AMCATS are poised to take the next step forward during the ‘09-‘10 season. |
