Alice Lambert '87
The Department of Art & Design has selected Alice Lambert ’87 for the 2019–2020 Faculty Spotlight. On display in the Art Center Gallery of Miriam Hall, now through the end of the academic year, are Alice’s most recent works and others from her personal collection and some that are held in private collections.
Her work comprises a variety of mediums: oil on canvas, pencil drawings, pastel chalk paintings, and pen & ink drawings. One of her favorites is entitled Julia at the Wedding , a black and brown ink drawing on toned paper, heightened with white conte chalk. “I was at my daughter's wedding on Cape Cod and noticed the flower girl adjusting the strap of her shoe while sitting on a bench by the water." Alice took a picture of the scene and used that to create the drawing.
Alice enrolled in the Studio Art Program at Anna Maria in 1984 as a nontraditional student. She had already earned a business degree from Merrimack College, which led to career opportunities in Washington, D.C., and New York City. Alice and her husband settled in Holden to raise their family of five children. Once her youngest was in school, Alice decided to pursue her passion for art.
Balancing school and family was daunting at best, but she earned a degree in art with the goal of becoming a book illustrator. When Ralph Parente, Chair of the Art Department at the time, asked Alice to teach Drawing I for the 1987 fall semester, she decided to give it a try. Thus began her distinguished teaching career at Anna Maria, which has spanned some 30 years, twenty-five years as Chair of the Art Department and five as Division Chair for the School of Visual and Performing Arts. At the start of her teaching career, she earned a Master’s in Art from Rhode Island College.
Alice has been a member of the Anna Maria Alumni Association Board since 2016.
As Professor Emerita, Alice continues to teach one course per semester: Calligraphy: Design & Layout. This relaxed schedule allows for time to concentrate on her own art work and to enjoy her extended family — 12 grandchildren and counting!
