Common Scams that Target the Elderly
Scammers tend to target elderly people with all kinds of schemes, taking advantage of their isolation, ease of trust, higher savings, and lack of tech savvy, among other things. See how you can take steps to educate yourself on these types of scams.

The Division of Elder Affairs
Established in 1970, enhances the quality of life of Worcester's elders age 60 and over by providing a wide-range of services. A small paid staff is augmented by senior aides, interns, volunteers and community partners. The division provides a continuum of direct services to elders through the Worcester Senior Center, which opened in June 2000, as well as through sub-contracted programs operated by agencies in the community. In addition, staff is involved in community initiatives and coordinates the committees of the Commission on Elder Affairs. Education and outreach is accomplished through a monthly newsletter, weekly television and radio series, web sites and utilization of all public media.

Worcester Senior Center
Located at 128 Providence Street, the Worcester Senior Center is a bright, welcoming place for all seniors, their families and caregivers, elder service providers and the community at large. Approximately one mile from City Hall, the Center is on two bus routes and has ample on-site, free parking. There is a strong emphasis on health and wellness programming, in addition to fitness, intergenerational events, support groups, arts & crafts classes, multi-cultural programs, computer classes and various other educational and recreational activities. Lunch is provided every day, as well as light fare at the diner. In addition to scheduled programs, elders enjoy a spacious library, computer lab practice, games, art exhibits and landscaped grounds. They also come to the Senior Center for assistance with personal matters, obtaining information and support from the staff of Elder Affairs, as well as, partnering organizations providing such services as veterans' assistance, health insurance counseling, food stamps, tax return preparation, legal assistance and individual client advocacy. The Senior Scoop is a free monthly newsletter listing activities, menus and programs for the month.

The Massachusetts Family Caregiver Support Program
Established under Title III-E of the Older Americans Act to assist caregivers with information and access to services and supports. The Family Caregiver Support Program empowers elders and caregivers by providing information, education, support, and services that enhance quality of life. Collectively this program was initiated in an effort to help individuals manage the enormous personal, social, and economic challenges of caring for an elderly parent, relative, or friend. Our objective is to support long-term care systems designed to prevent premature institutionalization and to promote elders' independence in the community. After all, family caregiving and informal supports are essential components of improving the quality of life of elders in Central Massachusetts.
