Anna Maria College announces that nursing students, Talia Nichols ’15 of Woodstock, CT and Kayla Buck ’15 of Wilbraham, MA have been accepted to volunteer overseas with the organization Work the World. As part of this program, the two nursing students will be volunteering in the health hub of Iloilo, Philippines for two weeks in the summer of 2014. The Work the World program offers students an opportunity to gain important practical experience while providing assistance to those living in underprivileged areas. According to Ms. Nichols: The country itself suffers from under resourced hospitals and clinics. Participating in this program, I will help augment support to understaffed and underfunded health facilities. There will be opportunities to see cases rarely found in North America, including tropical diseases such as malaria, leprosy and dengue fever. I am hoping to be placed in pediatrics, where the challenges and rewards of working with doctors and nursing teams in a developing country will strengthen both my personal and professional development. I am thrilled to be able to experience a culture so different from my own and look forward to helping the Filipino people.
